Russia and Japan plan to create "Spectrum-UV"

Representatives of the Russian state corporation "Roscosmos" and the Japanese Space Agency for Aerospace Research (JAXA) signed a contract agreement to develop and build an ultraviolet space observatory Spectrum-UV.

The signing of the agreement became known from an interview with the Deputy Director of the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences M. Sachkov, which was given by RIA Novosti.

The new telescope and its future capabilities

So, according to the interlocutor, the Japanese side has been an active participant in the project since 2021. The parties agreed to create a spectrograph designed to study the atmospheres of exoplanets.

The new space station will be able to observe space bodies in the ultraviolet spectrum of radiation inaccessible to terrestrial telescopes. So, according to the known parameters, the apparatus under development will be quite close to the well-known telescope belonging to NASA - Hubble.

And thanks to the new research equipment, scientists will be able to study physical processes, which took place in the "young" Universe (the formation of the first stars, the development of galaxies, the growth of black holes and etc.).

Thus, the new Russian-Japanese telescope will have a 1.7 meter mirror, as well as low and high resolution spectrographs. This equipment will allow obtaining images in the ultraviolet range with the highest possible resolution.

The Spektr-UF apparatus is planned to be launched into a working orbit no earlier than 2025, while the launch is planned to be carried out from the Vostochny cosmodrome.

So in the summer, a message was published that about 3.68 billion Russian rubles would be allocated for the development and assembly of the "Russian Hubble".

These funds should be mastered by 2025 within the framework of the program “creation of working design documentation for the corner parts spacecraft, its further creation and verification of the performance of a whole complex of scientific equipment in the period from 2021 to 2025 year.

Well, it's nice to know that in addition to American companies, Russian specialists are also taking part in the space race (albeit together with representatives of other countries).
