How To Extend The Life Of An LED Bulb? Making an eternal light bulb in 5 minutes
LED bulbs are often quoted as having a lifespan of 50,000 hours or so, but in fact the bulb may not last even a year. In this article, I will tell you how you can literally in five minutes make sure that the lamp life exactly exceeds the stated warranty time.
The reasons for the breakdown are the burning of the LEDs or the breakdown of the capacitors.
People have noticed that if you reduce the power of the lamp by 30 percent, the lifespan will increase significantly, and this is what we need to do.
In the cheapest bulbs, bad capacitors are installed that do not live for more than a year, so there is no reason to even modify them, but medium-price bulbs will do quite well.
For the modification process, it is better to take light bulbs with high power, because after reducing the power, it should be bright. Optimally, when the light bulb has a power of 15 watts. And it is desirable that it be with a pulse driver and a stabilizer, which allows it to shine the same regardless of voltage.
And another nuance. There are lamps with two-board design and single-board, where the driver is on the board with LEDs, and the capacitor is soldered on the back. To make the modification of the light bulb go quickly, it is better to take a single-board design.
For the test, I took a light bulb with a power of 13 W and 1200 lumens of light without pulsation. It has a pulse driver, and it costs about 150 rubles.
First you need to remove the cap, and find a single board under it. It needs resistors R1 and R2, which set the LED current.
They are connected in parallel and have nominal values of 2.7 and 5.5 OM. Be careful to break the second resistor without touching anything around. That's it, the modernization is complete, the power of the light bulb has decreased to 8-9 W, and the luminous flux has decreased to 920 lumens.
Now this light bulb is equivalent to an 85 watt incandescent lamp in terms of light, which is very good. And the efficiency of the modernized design has increased by about 15 percent. But the most important thing is that the lamp has become much colder, and the body heats up 15-20 degrees less.
Under such conditions, the LEDs will be able to work much longer, it remains only to rely on capacitors, although it will be much easier for them, due to the fact that there is a much lower temperature under the hood. If the capacitor does not break, the light bulb can work for 10, 20, or even 30 years without problems.
But keep in mind that when you alter a light bulb, you automatically lose the warranty on it if someone in the store looks inside and notices that you have insolently broken one of the resistors!
