"Burn wood to protect against fire" - it was this strange logic of the Japanese technology Shou Sugi Ban (original Japanese name Yaki sugi-ita) that attracted me when I stumbled upon it. It seemed that there was amazing decor and decor. But everything turns out to be much deeper.

Friends, a big hello to everyone. I remember very well how in my childhood my dad made such a small decor for the built-in wall in our apartment.

Burning wood processing, revives again. But, not everyone knows how to do it correctly (beautifully and profitably). There are nuances.

Then everything was done in a simple way, but I wanted something unusual.

These are simple wooden slats, burned with a gas cutter (dad did it at the factory where he worked), and varnished. And now, for more than twenty years, these rails ...

So for me, the use of burnt wood in interior decoration was not something unusual and outstanding.

Until I have gone deeper into this issue.

I was not even particularly surprised that this is an ancient Japanese technology that has long been forgotten in Japan, and it began to revive thanks to European designers.

Most of all, the initial meaning of such wood processing aroused interest. After all, judging by the fact that the technology is ancient, it probably has some kind of practical meaning.

And so it turned out:

βœ” The first and, in my opinion, the most interesting property that wood acquires after firing is fire resistance. I do not know the chemical processes, but indeed, a charred tree is much more difficult to set on fire a second time.

βœ” Secondly, roasting neutralizes the cellulose, which is loved by various bugs, fungi, and mold. Accordingly, the tree receives protection from all this "zoo".

βœ” And on top of that, the carbon layer creates protection from moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

βœ… As a result, we get a very long-term protection of the tree. In the same Japan, there are many buildings built from wood processed in this way. And their age is more than one hundred years.

But in reality, not everything is so simple.

If you think that you will take a manual gas burner, slightly undermine the facade of your wooden house, and it will stand for three hundred years, then you are mistaken.

Technology, that's what technology is, that it has certain rules.

  • Firing must be done to a specific depth.
Different degrees of firing give different results and protection (Image from Yandex Pictures).

All surface firing options are for decoration only.
  • The kind of wood used matters. In Japan, Japanese cedar was used. If applied to our country, then conifers are closest to the resinous structure of cedar.
  • Well, organizing the process itself is not an easy task.

The classic way is that three planks are tied together to form something like a pipe. Then this structure is set on fire from the inside, on one side, and placed in a vertical position. It will burn for a couple of minutes and into the water.

Here and uniform firing and no cost.

If you try to deeply burn the boards with a burner, then you can burn a cylinder for several boards. You will never get enough ...

Although there are examples of designs that are more advanced. Apparently some kind of production (home business).

But in the end, the result can be very interesting.
