Rosatom starts mining lithium in Argentina, which will be used for the production of domestic batteries

click fraud protection

The modern world is simply impossible to imagine without the use of rechargeable batteries and every year more and more of them are required. This means that the near future cannot be imagined without increasing the production of lithium batteries.

All this is well understood in the Russian Federation, and therefore, active work is underway to form a reliable basis for an easily scalable production of lithium batteries.

There is just one small snag. Lithium is a rather rare element, and with a sharp increase in demand for it, a shortage may arise. That is why all world corporations are fighting for the well-known deposits of this element. Russia, represented by Rosatom, is also not lagging behind and has already gained access to a lithium deposit in Argentina.

Lithium production in Russia and its prospects

The first domestic plant for the production of lithium storage batteries will be built by Rosatom in the Kaliningrad region.

Thus, the new plant will be located on the territory of the Baltic NPP and, according to the plan, should be put into operation in 2026, and will be able to produce approximately 3 GWh per year.

And according to the design documentation, the plant's capacity must be at least 10 GW * h with the possibility of increasing this indicator.

And it is quite logical that both this and possible future similar plants in Russia will require uninterrupted and sufficient supplies of the main component - lithium.

Most of the lithium on Earth is mined in the so-called "lithium triangle", in which large volumes of this raw material are concentrated. So this "triangle" includes Argentina, and representatives of "Rosatom" signed an agreement with local companies for the joint development of local deposits.

Agreements have already been signed to form a joint venture Alpha One Lithium B.V.

Under the current agreement, the Russian side owns 15% of the shares of the joint venture, and this share cost $ 30 million. But as soon as the complex of all the necessary feasibility studies is completed, Rosatom will have the right to increase its participation to 50% by investing another 185 million US dollars in the enterprise.

If such a procedure does take place, then Rosatom will have the right to acquire 100% of the lithium produced in this field and, thus, to fully control the flow of raw materials.

Well, it’s nice to know that the Russian Federation is not going to stay away from world progress and is engaged in the development of promising projects. We will follow the development of the Argentine-Russian joint venture.
