Do-it-yourself "floating" screed: I thought that the thickness of 30 mm is not enough. I evaluate my work after a while.
At a time when many order a mechanized, semi-dry floor screed, I decided to do everything much harder and longer. The hope was that the final result would be worth it ...
Friends, a big hello to everyone. Some readers, in the comments to my articles, write that I am not giving any useful information, or that I am doing everything wrong on purpose, so that I can write an article about this later (you need to think of this 🤔).
And to be honest, I can’t even blame you for this position, because sometimes I don’t understand my choice myself. And if you evaluate all this from the outside, then even more so (especially when you look at the situation after a while).
The floor screed in my house is no exception.
This is the most global job I had to do this summer.
âś… It had several features that would seem strange to many.
Work alone, no experience. For many, this is wildness, but I'm used to it. My only assistant is my wife, but she doesn't always succeed.
As for the cement works, I do everything myself ...
Kneading with your own hands. It is good that there is a concrete mixer, but it was not easy with it either.
The use of fiberglass reinforcement and fiber. Here who is in what is much. Someone thinks that the reinforcement is superfluous, someone only uses a steel mesh. I decided to come up with a third option, for me, so with a margin.
But with all this, the thickness is minimal.
âś” Somewhere up to 80 mm. But there are places with a thickness of 30 mm.
Those. I didn’t regret reinforcement, but I didn’t manage to add a couple of centimeters of concrete. This is really my jamb: since the base was initially with drops, it was necessary to start from the highest point. It was with her that I was mistaken ..
And looking from the outside, it all looks somehow incomprehensible ..
There is something wrong here, there in its own way, while all in sweat and soap, and a lot of time wasted ...
Maybe it was worth hiring a brigade who would put a mechanized screed in one day, and not suffer? After all, I didn't even compare prices (there is an option that would even be cheaper).
Although, maybe everything works out perfectly only in the comments?
After all, how many times have I convinced myself that, despite the well-known technologies, each work is an individuality. And the process, often, is half an improvisation.
At the same time, working with your own hands, in your own home, is generally a separate action, which not everyone will understand. And here, despite all the difficulties, the process is no less important than the result ...
And by the way, the result suits me so far. The surface of the screed was primed, and there seems to be no dust.
- In this case, the surface is used to its full.
- And even quite decent weights are worth.
And I did not find any cracks, either shrinkage or constructional ones. And this despite the fact that the thickness of the screed is small and everything is on the EPSP layer.
Friends, what do you think: Is the construction site just about the result, or about the process too? I am waiting for your opinion in the comments, it is always interesting to read and discuss.
