How to cut slate without a grinder quickly and easily
A friend recently told me that you can't cut slate without a grinder. That, in principle, it will not be possible to cope with slate without a power tool. How wrong he was! I had to show and prove how much he was mistaken.
I have a friend. Like a serious erudite person. But stubborn, horror is simple. Argues to blue in the face) Moreover, even in the topic in which he does not understand. I don't understand what he always hopes for... So what am I talking about? We started talking about the roof, including the slate. It was something like this:
- Here is slate - material for all materials! Universal - at least cut the roof, at least build a fence, at least cover the beds. That's just very fragile. Without special devices, you cannot dissolve it in any way.
- How not to dissolve it? Do you think that before the invention of grinders and chainsaws, slate was not used? Waiting for the grinders to invent? What nonsense!
- Yes, I tried it. I arrived at the dacha. I had to tinker with the slate. I couldn't cut it until I borrowed a grinder from a neighbor. With her, work began to boil.
- Eh! You don't know the basics of construction. You need to teach everything.
As a result, we went to the workshop to "learn" to cut the slate))
Maybe I have readers who, like my friend, do not know how slate can be dissolved using only a nail and a hammer. I'll tell you if it comes in handy.
I heard about this method from the older generation. But he took advantage of it when one day he arrived at the dacha without a tool. And in order not to go back, and not to waste time, I decided to try how this method works.
Without a doubt, it is more convenient and faster to cut slate with a grinder, jigsaw or chainsaw. But if there are no tools, then you can do it differently.
You will need:
- a larger nail by 200-250,
- hammer,
- And that's it!
It is necessary to outline the cutting line on the slate, and further along the line, make many small holes with light hammer blows on the nail. You can use a drill if you have one. The holes should be no more than 2 cm apart. And then on our own, pressing down with our foot, or with the help of an assistant, we simply break off the slate along the intended cutting line.
Works great. It will be more convenient to dissolve the slate if the necessary grooves are pre-moistened with water.
With this "pre-Bulgarian" method, any curve can be drawn and cut by making holes and then carefully connecting them with a chisel. My grandfather did this about 40 years ago, and everything worked out for him. And I did it.
Many will write that the method takes a lot of time and effort. But I am not talking about him as the main one. I tell you that you can do this if there are no tools.
In addition, an experiment was carried out. We arranged a competition between the masters. While one master took out the grinder, unwound the wire and began to work, the second master during this time managed to dissolve 4 sheets of slate.
