Why they wear glasses on chickens: poultry secrets

The poultry problem

Poultry breeding - this is stress, first of all, for the bird itself. And under stress, her behavior can radically change and instead of a peaceful neighborhood, chickens and roosters begin to peck each other. This phenomenon is called biting. It is characterized by aggressive behavior - attack by some individuals on others and eating eggs. Pecking is also called bird cannibalism.

There are two reasons for its occurrence:

• deterioration of the food supply (lack of protein);
• age-related changes.

Feed factor

Violation of the balance of feed; a decrease in the amount of protein in the diet; overfeeding poultry, and then a sharp withdrawal of protein feed - all this leads to pecking. With a lack of protein, the bird tries to make up for its deficiency and first begins to pluck feathers, and then peck each other's flesh.

The fact is that fast growth and weight gain is laid down in chickens at the genetic level - otherwise they will not survive. With a meager diet, the chicks eat the fallen feathers. This behavior becomes a habit and manifests itself when there is not enough protein in the diet.

All this happens according to the principle of natural selection - the strong pluck the weak, which in the absence of control leads to their death. The same applies to eggs - in times of hunger they are eaten with pleasure by the chickens themselves.

Age factor

The age factor has two stages: the first, when there is a change from embryonic fluff to feathers. Chicks eat fallen feathers and down, which becomes a reflex. And if they have a protein deficiency, then they begin to peck feathers and down from weaker individuals.

The second stage takes place before the start of oviposition. In underweight chickens, when egg-laying is stimulated with protein and additional lighting, the oviduct often falls out. This provokes individuals prone to pecking / cannibalism to attack a sick bird.

So what are the glasses for?

Everything that we described above leads to a decrease in livestock and, accordingly, to economic damage in the industrial poultry industry. And any breeding of poultry is done not for the sake of beauty, but for the sake of completely mercantile goals - obtaining meat, eggs, income from the sale of chicks. Therefore, pecking is an extremely undesirable option for the development of events in the chicken coop.

And to prevent this unprofitable action, special glasses are put on the chickens. Only in contrast to the well-known optical device designed to improve vision, chicken glasses, on the contrary, completely block the direct view. And "blinded" chickens do not attack each other. So they do not see other individuals, that is, potential victims, and cannot find eggs. But at the same time, the glasses do not interfere with the bird's feeding (finding food), since its peripheral vision is well developed.

Glasses are securely attached to the nostrils using special pins. They are inexpensive - around 13-15 rubles per unit. This is the price of two eggs and it is unlikely that such an amount will somehow significantly affect the profitability of the farm. If the bird begins to bite, then the purchase of such a "gadget" will save more than it will cost.
