What is the difference between gray, red, black and white sewer pipes

Everyone saw that there were gray and red sewer pipes. Less common are white, previously black existed. And there are also blue (casing). I propose to figure out how they differ in characteristics and where, which one should be used (if anyone does not know).

The most common today sewer pipe - gray. Its purpose is only for internal sewerage installation. There are different diameters, made mainly of polypropylene. But some manufacturers can make them from PVC.

Polypropylene is a chemically resistant material that can withstand temperatures up to 90 degrees without loss of strength (does not deform). But with frost resistance it is not so good. In addition, due to the thin walls of the pipes of this color, it should not be used outside buildings, much less in the ground.

The diameter of gray sewer pipes is: 32 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, 110 mm. Pipe wall thicknesses: 1.8 mm, 1.9 mm and 2.7 mm.

Red (ginger or orange) sewer pipe - for external laying of sewer communications.

Pipes are made mainly of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which has the best characteristics at different temperatures. Pipes of this color have thicker walls. Diameters: from 110 mm to 500 mm. But the most popular diameters for laying in suburban construction are 110 mm and 160 mm (wall thickness is 3.2 mm and 4 mm, and 200 mm pipes are already 4.9 mm).

Plastic pipes have a low coefficient of thermal deformation and, with their price, weight and absence of corrosion, they have almost completely replaced cast-iron sewer pipes.

The movement of liquid in the sewer is accompanied, albeit small, but noise. To minimize noise, there are white sewer pipes. In terms of their characteristics, they are close to gray pipes, but they are made with sound insulation.

Because of this, their cost is much higher than gray pipes. Therefore, they are not often used.

There are stories when inexperienced plumbers mistook white ventilation pipes for sewers and connected a sewer system to them. Guess what happened on the floors below.

Since the days of the USSR, black plastic sewer pipes (from the 90s to the 2000s). Made of polyethylene (HDPE). This is also a chemically resistant material, but it deforms strongly already at 60 degrees, the pipe spreads and begins to flow in the seals.

But at negative temperatures, it slightly changes the characteristics, does not break like a gray pipe.

For the installation of casing pipes for wells, there are blue plastic pipes.

They are made from PVCVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride). It differs from PVC in that it is an improved polymer with an infinite number of polymer repeats (as chemists say). The most common diameters of such casing pipes are from 125 mm to 225 mm. They are threaded and do not need to be soldered by means of thermal heating during installation.

It is also convenient to make a filter for a well of them.

Slits are made in the pipe and wrapped with a stainless steel mesh. Sand does not penetrate into the well and does not silt it up. The well is pumped faster.
