Wooden floor slabs with characteristics similar to concrete slabs

Everyone knows that in houses built using frame technology or in completely wooden houses, perhaps the only option for floors is a system of beams. The beams are hemmed with a board, plywood, and from above (if it is an interfloor overlap), floors are made from 50-mm boards, with alignment again with plywood as a sub-floor.

There is a lot of work with such floors. I propose to get acquainted with two options on how to make an absolutely smooth floor and ceiling at once by installing wooden floor slabs.

These are floor slabs produced using the technology CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) or slabs of cross glued timber.

CLT boards are also used for multi-storey construction. This technology is used to make not only floor slabs, but also panels and walls for houses.

CLT is a multi-layer, cross-glued board. In much the same way as gluing veneer in plywood. The board, depending on the number of layers, turns out to be equally strong in bending both along and across. The minimum number of layers is 3. The maximum is 12. The boards for the production of slabs can be spliced ​​and made a slab up to 24 m.

The technology is native to Europe. The largest companies producing these panels are German HMS, Norwegian Moelvon and Swiss Martinsons. CLT is used to build not only private houses, but also apartment buildings, hotels, stadiums.

Lumber for slabs - chamber drying. Only in this case, the absence of the formation of cracks during drying is ensured. The seams between the slabs, after laying them on the walls, are joined according to the following scheme:

Self-tapping screws are sunk into the wood and closed with wooden chops. The place is additionally polished. The load that a CLT floor slab can withstand is comparable to or even greater than concrete floor slabs. It all depends on the thickness of the CLT board. The manufacturer puts an eight-fold supply in these wooden floors.

Testing process. As you can see, even if the lower layers are destroyed by deformation, the upper ones simply bend.

The bending resistance is 14 MPa for a 1 m wide slab and 20 MPa for a 3 m wide slab. 14 MPa is 142 kg / cm2. The weight of the five-layer board is 75 kg / m2. Installation is only possible with a crane.

Such slabs can also be used on block houses. Quick installation with fixing with anchors to an armored belt or brickwork through waterproofing. But the armored belt should then be perfectly aligned.
