I made sure that snow is an excellent, natural insulation. How to use it on your site? A few specific examples.

Nowadays, there are still people who promote construction technologies from past centuries, and consider them the best (for example, insulation with sawdust, only cold attics, and no attics, and in general, the best house is wooden or brick). I respect everyone's opinion, but I look more towards modern technologies (however, it does not always work). But there are some fundamental things that you cannot pass by ...

Friends, I am glad to welcome you. This year, winter pleases with an abundance of snow, which is certainly good when it lies somewhere far from your site. And so - this is additional work that takes a lot of time (but for now, my pleasure 😁).

And when I decided to clear several paths deep into the area covered with snow, I came across an interesting moment (watch a short video, everything is clear there).

The ground under the snowdrifts is not frozen at all.

The thickness of the snow cover, which I dug, was about half a meter, and the ground there was not even frozen. Soft like summer.

Of course, it's not news to me that snow is a natural insulation. But when you see everything clearly, then there is some kind of childish surprise.

βœ… This property of snow has been used since ancient times in agriculture, for the preservation of perennial and winter plants. This is the only thing I have heard of, and the first thing that comes to mind.

But I wondered what benefits snow can bring specifically on my site.

βœ” The foundation of the house.

Actually, I took care of this in advance. Since the foundation of my house is shallow (or rather, it practically stands on the surface), then an insulated blind area was made.

But why not use additional insulation?

Of course, I will not poke snow on the walls of the house, but I will definitely not clean it at a distance of 1 meter from them.

βœ” Septic tank.

So far, it has not been used for its intended purpose, but nevertheless, I have always worried about the fate of this structure in winter. It was especially interesting: will the filtration field freeze?

And now I know exactly the solution to possible problems. A good layer of snow will always save my wastewater collection system from the winter frost.

βœ” Caisson under the well, and plumbing systems underground.

Arrangement of my Abyssinian well, I also did it with additional insulation (the groundwater level is high, you cannot dig deep).

But a layer of snow on top will always be a plus.

What about snow on the roof of the house?

Many people believe that the more snow there is on the house, the less heat goes through the roof.

Probably so perfect... (the image is taken from "Yandex-pictures" for clarity).

Perhaps somewhere it works, but in my attic roof, a ventilation gap is made between the insulation and the metal tile, and therefore the thermal insulation properties of snow will not help there (that's why I don't see any reason to accumulate it there, why don't I put snow protectors).

The snow calmly comes off the roof ...
