How to quickly magnetize or demagnetize a screwdriver. My experiments
There are various situations when in some cases a magnetized screwdriver is needed (for example, to get a bolt with a screwdriver or to tighten something with one hand). Or vice versa, you need a screwdriver without magnetic properties (so that metal chips do not stick to it).
There are a number of videos online showing how to do this. But doubts about their effectiveness crept in. Decided to check. I took several screwdrivers from various steels.
The most common way to magnetize a screwdriver from the Internet is to simply place the screwdriver on the magnet for a few seconds.
The screwdriver will acquire magnetic properties. Demagnetization in the same way will not work.
On the Internet, the demagnetization process is shown with a ring magnet from the speaker. We pass a screwdriver through this ring-shaped magnet and that's it - the screwdriver is demagnetized.
This can be seen, for example, in this short video: https://youtu.be/kOjFtJ87nK4
But on my screwdrivers, this method did not work. I began to experiment with the movements of the screwdriver and found out that movements of the screwdriver along the magnet from the handle lead to magnetization, and movements from the working part to the handle lead to demagnetization. And it is not necessary to thread a screwdriver through the ring magnet. An ordinary flat magnet will do.
You can also demagnetize a screwdriver if you turn it along the axis, but drive it the same way - from the handle. The chromium-vanadium alloy is poorly demagnetized. And mild steel alloy. My experiments with magnetization and demagnetization of different screwdrivers can be seen in this video.
