Tips for gardeners: how to grow a large-leaved hydrangea in a pot
Hydrangea can be grown not only on your site, but also as a pot culture at home. It will seem strange to many when a hydrangea is grown in a pot. But it is known that the large-leaved species of this culture is thermophilic. Hydrangea lays flower buds in autumn. If the shoots freeze in winter, then there will be no flowering. This is especially true in areas with severe cold.
So do not torment your beautiful hydrangea, but it is better to plant a young culture in a pot with a volume of 3.5 liters or more. In the fall, when she drops the leaves, transplant into a larger container.
Soil preparation
First of all, you need to choose the right soil. Not neutral, but acidic soil is suitable. You can cook it yourself. You need to take coniferous litter, garden soil and peat in equal proportions. Everything needs to be mixed.
If you don’t have the opportunity to go to the forest, then go to the gardening center and purchase soil for rhododendrons or azaleas. In extreme cases, you can get by with garden soil and peat, taken in equal quantities.
What to put in a pot
A layer of expanded clay should be poured onto the bottom of the container. This is necessary for drainage so that the water does not stagnate and the roots do not rot. On top of the expanded clay, you need to put the seedling in a pot and pour a layer of prepared soil. Its volume depends on the volume of the earthen clod of hydrangea. In this case, the root neck should be at ground level, it cannot be dug in.
After filling the pot with soil, the plant should be watered abundantly. As a decorative mulch, expanded clay can be poured on top. Thus, the moisture will last longer.
The ideal mulch for hydrangeas is coniferous needles, cones, wood chips and peat.
What to do after planting hydrangeas
After the hydrangea is planted, you should feed the flower culture. In gardening centers, you can buy fertilizers specially selected for hydrangeas, both in ampoules and granules.
Where to keep a hydrangea in a pot in winter
In winter, the hydrangea, which is planted in a pot, feels good until the leaves are shed on the windowsill. After that, the culture is taken out to the loggia, to the veranda, to the basement. The main thing is that the storage temperature is not lower than + 5 degrees and not higher than + 10 degrees. In the spring, when the air temperature rises, the hydrangea will give green shoots. During this period, you need to resume regular watering and top dressing.
