My wife couldn't believe her eyes when after 9 years I made an interior door
"Shoemaker without boots" - as they say. He made doors for others, but his hands did not reach himself. My wife even offered to buy ready-made ones, and we even went shopping and looked at what they offer. But she did not like the doors coated with PVC film, and the price of such doors seemed high.
In general, I promised to make oak doors to the house. And the first one is ready and installed.
And with this door it turned out to make a surprise. The door was made slowly and did not say when it was ready. And somehow my wife and daughter went to visit one of the weekends, and during this time I managed to install the door. She was very surprised when she came home.
Although I said earlier that the door is made of oak, but this is not entirely true.
Next, I will briefly tell you how and from what I made this door.
Earlier, I already partially touched on this topic when I talked about sawn veneer.
Here I will show the main points in the manufacture of this door.
At first I sawed and planed a lot to get an oak veneer.
The veneer I got was 5 mm. and I pasted it on both sides on pine 20 mm. boards.
The door details ended up being 30 mm thick. For an interior door, this thickness is quite suitable.
To make the visible edge of the parts look like a solid board, I used a circular saw to cut the veneer on the blanks and the edge at 45 °.
The door frame was assembled in the usual way on spikes. The spikes were made on a milling cutter, and the sockets for them were made using a drilling machine and a chisel. I glued the frame and additionally tightened it with dowels. The holes for the dowels were drilled with a slight offset in order to additionally tighten the parts when driving the dowel.
To fix the panels and glass in the door, I made such a glazing bead.
On one side of the door frame I glued this glazing bead, and on the other side I nailed it when I installed the panels and glass.
The door frame was also made using oak veneer, only glued it on one side.
Of course, I didn’t have such wide boards, and at first I glued the veneer to the desired width, and then I glued the pine base.
For bonding 5 mm. oak planks, I used very simple and convenient homemade clamps, which are great for such tasks.
The door was covered with a water-based renovation varnish from Leroy Merlin. The lacquer is slightly tinted, the color is beech. Good and even can be applied with a brush.
This varnish dries quickly and sands well. Did 2-3 layers with intermediate polishing.
Well, after the varnish, I inserted and fixed the panels and glass. I glued the panels from sawn veneer and they also came out 5 mm thick.
When installing the glass, I glued it to silicone so that it would not rattle.
The family liked the result.
