South Korea sent to France the penultimate part of the working area of ​​the ITER fusion reactor

Representatives of the South Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries said that the company's engineers have successfully completed production of the penultimate part of the body of the working area of ​​a thermonuclear reactor as part of the implementation of the international ITER project.

Moreover, the manufactured part is already being sent to France, where it will be installed in the reactor shaft in its place. The last part of the hull is already 90% ready, and if everything goes without delay, it will have to be delivered and installed by the end of this year.

The ITER fusion reactor is at the assembly stage

The body of the thermonuclear reactor, inside which the plasma heated to an incredible temperature of 150 million degrees Celsius will be kept, was divided into nine parts. At the same time, five of them were produced on the territory of the European Union, and the remaining four parts were ordered to be manufactured by South Korea.

The thing is that dozens of countries, including the Russian Federation, are involved in the creation of this demonstration thermonuclear reactor in France. Therefore, it was decided that each participating country would make its material contribution and create various parts of the reactor.

For reference. ITER (ITER) is an international project aimed at creating an experimental thermonuclear reactor of the Tokamak type. The main task of the reactor is to demonstrate the possibility of commercial application of thermonuclear fusion reaction, and also the solution of various physical and technological problems that are sure to be encountered on the way to implementation project.

The project has been in operation since the 1980s, and the reactor was originally planned to be built by 2016. The new construction completion date is set for 2025.

Thus, some equipment of the working chamber is created by Russian specialists, and, for example, India produces facing plates to protect the walls of the reactor from high-temperature plasma. And absolutely all work is carried out in a coordinated manner.

So, South Korean specialists started assembling their parts back in 2012, and the first parts were sent back in 2020, and at the moment the last South Korean part is 90% ready.
