The probable reason for the invasion of the American Virginia-class submarine into the territorial waters of the Russian Federation and the method of its detection
Incident in which a U.S. Navy Virginia-class submarine trespassed into sovereign waters Russian Federation, occurred near the island of Urup, which is part of the southern group of the Greater Kuril ridges. After the discovery, the American ship refused to establish contact and did not comply with the requirement for an immediate ascent.
Such actions by the crew of the American submarine forced the Russian side to fire a warning shot from the RBU-6000 Smerch-2 rocket launcher, and an RSL-60 mine was fired.
Only this rather harsh measure forced the submarine to immediately leave Russian waters.
We will talk about this incident and its probable causes in this material.
What did the American submarine do near the South Kuriles
In fact, such a “cat and mouse game” on and under water is taking place between the Russian Federation (formerly the USSR) and the USA, and the UK has already more than forty years since the moment when low-noise watercraft (MAPL) of the Los Angeles type appeared in the West and Trafalgar.
But throughout history, such "impudent" provocations with entry into territorial waters (which were closed for exercises) are extremely rare.
And it is likely that the crew of the American submarine acted according to a strictly agreed plan with the command of the US Navy and the Pentagon. So what did a Virginia-class submarine need?
If we take into account the important factor that it was in this sector of the Russian Navy that they conducted their exercises, then it is likely that the Americans were attracted by this particular event.
So, using passive methods and equipment installed on the submarine, as well as modern and high-performance units primary processing of hydroacoustic signals, the Americans could detect and track most of the ships at a distance of 120 to 150 km.
And this means that, in fact, the Americans did not have the need to get close to Russian warships, much less enter our sovereign waters.
So what prompted the Americans to take such a risk?
The probable reason for such actions of the Americans
So, the most likely reason for this behavior of the crew of the American submarine is that hydroacoustics discovered a low-intensity source of sound waves previously unknown to them.
And most likely, we can talk about either the strategic submarine Borey-A (project 955 / A) or the multi-purpose nuclear submarine K-573 Novosibirsk (project 855 M Yasen-M).
And it is very likely that it was the study of the acoustic trace of one of these objects that prompted the Americans to go closer.
And since the acoustic signatures of promising Russian submarines are comparable to the trace of the Virginia, for successful analysis they (the Americans) had to reduce the distance to 20-35 km.
What did the Americans hope for?
It is quite obvious that, performing such a maneuver, the Americans first of all hoped that their submarine had such low noise that Russian specialists would simply not notice it.
But they did not take into account one very important point: during the exercises in the area, anti-submarine aircraft IL-38 and the modernized IL-38N were involved.
These aircraft have a high-sensitivity detection complex, and, most likely, it was thanks to the work of highly sensitive equipment that it was possible to detect an American submarine.
Well, this incident once again showed that the confrontation between the two powers is still ongoing, and in our rather turbulent times, a strong and, most importantly, a modern army is extremely important.
