Russian scientists are working on a unique technology for the efficient combustion of fuel from "combustible ice"

Russian scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University are working on a technology for efficient combustion of new fuel - based on gas hydrates, both artificial and natural origin. That's about this technology and its prospects in the future and will be discussed in the current material.

New technology from Russian scientists

First, a few words about what gas hydrates are. So, gas hydrates are compounds from gas that are enclosed in an ice or water shell, and in the case of natural origin they are mined from the seabed.

Scientists are already calling these compounds the frozen fuel of the future, or simply combustible ice.

The development of a truly efficient technology for burning this type of fuel will make it possible to use "combustible ice" in modern energy and all kinds of engines and at the same time ensure minimal damage to the environment. nature.

These hydrates are mined mainly in the northern latitudes and at the moment 220 deposits are already known. These compounds are also interesting because, according to scientists, this is the richest source of hydrocarbon fuel on Earth.

But scientists see the main plus in the fact that when burning this type of fuel, there is a minimal release of harmful gases into the atmosphere.

The performed set of experiments showed that in the process of burning hydrates, emissions of such compounds such as nitrogen oxide and carbon are 50-80% less compared to fuels such as oil and coal.

Also, scientists have already determined that in the so-called double hydrates, compared to single hydrates, the rate of gas release is 2-5 times higher (this is a very important parameter for this type of fuel).

At the moment, Russian scientists are conducting laboratory experiments with almost all possible heating options for in order to collect as much information as possible about the burning options for "combustible ice" and, thus, to find the most effective method.

Of course, natural gas is a direct competitor of "combustible ice", and many countries are actively developing the infrastructure and technologies for its use. Therefore, at the moment, the production of “combustible ice” is at least twice as expensive compared to the cost of natural gas production.

But as soon as the technology for efficient combustion of hydrates is fully developed, countries with large deposits of "combustible gas" will be motivated to develop and create the necessary infrastructure, and production will become profitable.
