Water seal or water lock - the level of water, which does not allow an unpleasant smell from the pipes to penetrate upwards from the sewer. Some believe that the corrugated pipe is responsible for the water seal. And in the event of a stench, they begin to bend or clean it. But in fact, everything is not quite so. The owners of old apartments, where there are simply no corrugated pipes, are especially aware of this.

What is a siphon for?

The siphon flask is specially designed to take on the role of a water lock. It is arranged in such a way that there, at a constant level, there is water that clogs the smell from the sewer. A standard siphon requires about 300 ml. water.

If you open the flask, you can see that the water will never pour out. In the middle there is a special tube that plunges into the bottom. And even if unpleasant air from the sewer enters the main part, it still goes through this tube into the lower flask full of water. And there is no way the smell can get upstairs.

It does not matter which pipe will be connected to the siphon - corrugated or generally straight. In any case, it will protect your apartment from unnecessary odors.

Is it possible to create a water seal in a pipe

If your pipe is corrugated and can be folded, you can make a water lock in it. To do this, it is necessary to bend it in such a way that water constantly accumulates in one part. But this method will not be recommended to you by any competent plumber. First of all, then it will be difficult to clean such a place, and even if there is a siphon, then the corrugation has nothing to do with it.

If, on the sink, there is only the pipe itself and there is simply no siphon, then, of course, it is this method that will help to avoid an unpleasant odor. And it is imperative to create a water seal by bending. Having made a loop, it is better to strengthen it with the help of additional means, such as twine, electrical tape or wire.

How to avoid sewer odor

If there is a smell, then it's not the sewer at all. If you use the sink all the time, most likely, food and other waste got through the sink, which began to rot in this water. Therefore, it is necessary to open the siphon and clean it.

But it may happen that there is simply no water in the siphon, it has dried up. And this rarely happens - for example, if you left your apartment or house for several weeks, of course, the smell may appear. To do this, before a long absence, simply close the sink with a cork so that there is no unpleasant smell in the bathroom. And immediately after arrival, drain some cold water to fill the siphon and prevent the smell from reappearing.
