Scientists have created a miniature robot with a tenacity like a cockroach
What is the most tenacious insects on our planet? That's right - the cockroaches. They are so tenacious that even after you have come to such an insect, it can continue its way as if nothing had happened. Scientists are working to develop a mini-robots, we have long wanted to create an equally tenacious robot and have it finally happened.
A team of scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, have created a mini robot the size of a large postage stamp size of 3 cm in length and 1.5 in width. And it consists of the thinnest sheet of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which has an additional coating of a flexible polymer. And on both sides are mounted electrodes one of palladium, and the other of gold.
This material (PVDF) has piezoelectric properties and by passing through the AC material expands and contracts.
Thus, the electrodes connected to such a small plate, when an alternating voltage is extremely forced plate quickly bent and attached "legs" in front of the mini-robot converts the reduction in translation forward.
In this case, such a robot is able to cover the distance in 20 of their bodies for one second, which is the fastest result among all the existing mini-robots.
In addition, such a robot can even overcome slopes and carry a small payload, such as peanuts.
A robot weighs only one-tenth of a gram and this crumb is able to withstand pressure of 60 kilograms, in that a million times its own weight (for comparison cockroach can withstand the weight of 900 times its own). As stated by scientists, even if you potopchites on our robot, it will still continue to move, although its initial speed will decrease by almost 50%.
Now the research team is looking for replacement solutions of long and thin wires on the battery, as well as to realize the remote control system. In addition, the robot will be equipped with gas sensors that allow it to be used in areas of distress.
The studies were published in the journal Science Robotics
