Scientists were able to create the world's first liquid permanent magnet

Scientists at the University of California, the United States managed to get the world's first liquid permanent magnet which consists of nanoparticles, which include iron oxide.

All of us are well aware that the permanent magnets - are solid substances. After all, only they held the atomic lattice of the necessary configuration. But the so-called ferrofluid were discovered in the 1960s of the last century - are liquids that are composed of iron nanoparticles able to generate the same magnetic field.

But these liquid hold their magnetization even before, until an external influence exerted on them.

Exactly at that moment as the external field disappears, and ferrofluid completely lose their magnetization.

The investigators set out to prove that the fluid is able to acquire properties constant (solid) of the magnet and hold it.

Researcher from the University of Massachusetts T. Russell explained the "simplest variant of transformation of paramagnetic ferrofluid" she concluded as follows:

They were able to dissolve iron oxide nanoparticles in a special oil-polymeric substance. That's what has been transformed ferrofluid paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic state.

Joining in connection nanoparticles and extra soft polymer formed drop, which just has magnetic properties which have previously been characterized only solid magnets, but wherein the droplets have remained all properties liquid.

This seemingly impossible effect is possible due to the fact that nanoparticles are formed in the drops are so tightly packed that they have no freedom of movement. Thus, iron oxide nanoparticles formed rigid metal platform.

Once the magnet is removed from the droplets, they were magnetized, which showed their rotation relative to each other.

Further experiments showed that the created material retains its magnetic properties even after mechanical influences on it. So scientists have betrayed drops form: pancake, cylinder, sphere, and even the shape of an octopus. In addition, the drops could be configured so that you can turn on or off the magnetism on request.

Experiments with the created substance are still ongoing, but it is clear that this product can be used in the creation of robotics, or the design of new electronic gadgets.
