The roof, as well as the junction of the roof and exterior walls
The exterior walls and roof of the house are made of different materials and have different functions. Accordingly, the characteristics they have the same different. Therefore, proper insulation of the joint space is extremely important. It is important - to keep continuity of insulation. This requirement may seem obvious, but in fact is rarely carried out in the construction of town houses. And for energy efficient buildings, this requirement is particularly important, since a large amount of linear thermal bridges casts doubt on the whole idea.
A common problem is that for thermal insulation of walls and roofs are used on various characteristics of materials (polystyrene and mineral wool). And also the fact that these components are not insulated at the same time and often do different teams of workers. In addition, the junction closes the wooden beam (mauerlat), which makes it difficult to not only see, but also to correct the violations. And if mauerlat mounted too close to the outer edge of the wall, this warm, this distance is problematic. Timely check the continuity of the thermal insulation layer, at the junction of walls and roof - an important task of each builder.
If the distance between the rafter smaller than the standard size of insulation plates of mineral, the mineral wool for insulation is cut into 10-15 mm wider than the distance between the rafters. That provides a snug fit insulation to the rafters.
If polystyrene facade insulation is performed, it is necessary that the polystyrene was connected firmly with the mineral wool layer, which isolates the surface of the roof. This makes sense when there is no attic walls (or a height of about one meter and they are considered a continuation of the exterior walls).
Warming of the roof plane
In most modern private residential attics of houses. This means that the plane of the roof must be insulated in accordance with regulatory requirements (energy efficient homes heat transfer coefficient should be less than 0.20 W / m2 * ° C). In this case the thickness of the roof should be minimal so as not to restrict the space under the bevels that can be used.
The insulating layer is made of elastic materials with a fibrous structure - based glass or basalt. They are not only characterized by good thermal insulation properties, but also perfectly quench noise. In addition, they are not combustible. But they must also protect the two layers: wind-proofing the outside and inside of the vapor barrier. The total thickness of the mineral wool layer under the roof must be at least 200 mm (in energy efficient homes).
On construction sites I was able to watch a lot of processes, insulation of the roof. In most cases, insulation produced from within. But as I've seen and the way insulation of the roof outside.
