I made a clever trap and now there are no biting gadflies and horseflies on my site!
In early summer, when the sun is already very hot, they begin to show their activity biting insects: gadfly, horseflies, flies and others. I think many summer residents and residents of private houses know how much inconvenience they bring. These predatory creatures strive to bite us, but they bring the most harm to domestic animals, not giving them rest for a minute. For example, my horse suffered very much from them and at this time it had to be brought into the stable.
One of the methods of combating these pests is grass mowing (it is in tall grass that gadflies and horseflies like to settle), but this measure is temporary and does not help to reduce the insect population in any way. Animals can be protected with various spraying agents, but they also give a temporary effect (just a couple of hours) and only scare away insects.
However I found a way to get rid of gadflies and horseflies forever. Back last year made a clever trap that proved to be very effective. And now I will share this idea with you.
To make the frame of the trap, you will need slats or timber (I used 4 wooden slats 20 by 40 mm, 2 m long).
First of all, you need to make a neck, for this a plastic pipe with a diameter of 110 mm is perfect. We cut off a piece of about 20 - 25 cm (part of the pipe with a socket) and in the place where the elastic is located, we drill 4 holes in a circle at the same distance from each other.
Then we drill holes in the rails at an angle of 45 degrees, stepping back 25-30 mm from their edge, and fix them to a piece of pipe using bolts and nuts.
Now you need some kind of hoop with a diameter of 1.5 m (you can have a little more or less). For example, I made it from a metal-plastic pipe with a diameter of 20 mm (just 4 m of pipe remained after repair).
We put our structure on its feet, put a hoop on top, drill holes and fix it at a height of about 80 - 90 cm. It turns out such a hut.
Now you need to make a catcher bowl. For this, plastic bottles with a volume of 5 and 2 liters are perfect. We cut off the upper part and the neck of the two-liter bottle, and in the five-liter we cut out a circle so that it fits tightly on the pipe.
We insert the first part into the pipe, cover the second on top and the catcher bowl is ready.
After that, we cover the entire structure with a reinforced film (it is cheap) and cut off the excess part. On the hoop, I fixed it with ordinary clips for plastic pipes, and at the top I just wrapped it with electrical tape. He connected the joints of the film with double-sided tape.
And now the most important thing, you will need any black rubber ball with a diameter of 40 - 50 cm (you can buy any color, but then it will need to be painted), which must be hung inside the trap, so that 2/3 of its part is lower hoop. At the end, I also screwed the nails to the legs to prevent the trap from being blown away by the wind.
Now we put a trap in the right place and not only gadflies and horseflies, but even flies and other blood-sucking insects will immediately begin to accumulate in it. The trick is that the ball heats up in the sun and thus attracts biting insects. Due to their physiology, the gadfly and horseflies, sitting on the ball, can only fly up and so they fall into the catcher bowl. One such trap is capable of collecting and exterminating insects from an area of about 20 acres. In literally 2 years I managed to get rid of all local gadflies and horseflies forever.
