What is the step of the lathing for different roofing materials?
The foundation has been laid, the walls have been erected, we proceed to the roof! The lathing is an important part of its design. In order for the roof structure to have high strength, the lathing must be located at a certain distance from each other. The lathing step is calculated individually for each roofing material. More about this.
The installation technology, the type of lathing and the pitch between its elements depend on the selected roofing materials. In addition, climatic conditions affect the type of lathing. If in your area precipitation often falls in the form of a large amount of snow that accumulates on the roof, then it is worth making a double crate that is resistant to loads.
If for the roof you have chosen slate, the pitch of the crate will vary on average from 50 to 75 cm. Each slate sheet should be fixed with three beams 5-8 cm thick. A more accurate calculation of the appropriate distance can be done by knowing the thickness of the sheets and the characteristics of the roof. In addition to the sparse one, the use of a solid crate is also allowed. It is used for roofs with a slight slope.
For metal tiles solid and sparse crate can be used. In the second case, a step of 30-40cm is used. Between the extreme parts, it must be cut by about half (15-20 cm.). The calculation of the lathing distance depends on the size of the metal tiles, the slope of the slope and the thickness of the timber. For laying a roof made of metal tiles, you should use a bar 5-6 cm thick.
The technology for installing the battens for slate and metal tiles is identical. The step is often made equal to the wavelength or a multiple of it.
Shingles. The high weight of the material implies the installation of a stronger roof frame with a reinforced structure. The roof of the tiles will be supported by a lathing made of timber with a thickness of 6 cm. The lathing step should average 25-35 cm. It usually depends on the length of the tiles.
For folded roof the correctness of the lathing is especially important. With a small angle of inclination, you can install a solid crate. If the roof slope is more than 15 degrees, then the step should be clearly calculated. On average, it is 20-40 cm. Along the edges it is worth fixing a solid crate. The wrong pitch of the battens can lead to the formation of undulations on the standing seam roof, which will ruin both the appearance of the roof and its functionality.
Soft and roll roofing assumes the use of a solid lathing with gaps less than 1 cm. A sparse lathing complete with soft or rolled roofing materials will not provide the required rigidity and strength of the structure. For a soft roof, it is worth installing a reinforced double sheathing.
Ondulin. If you have chosen ondulin for the roof, the lathing step will be minimal. It depends on the angle of the roof slope. Up to 10 degrees, a solid type of crate is used; 10-15 degrees - a step of 5 cm; more than 15 degrees - from 6 cm.
