How does a Tesla valve work? And where can it be applied
The inventor Nikola Tesla had many patents and working inventions. And not only in electrical engineering. Much of his legacy is still not understood, but some are freely reproduced even at home. For example, Tesla coil. And the name of this Serbian inventor is now used in Tesla electric vehicles, emphasizing the uniqueness of their design.
N. Tesla had patents in other areas of physics. For example, Tesla's bladeless turbine:
Many repeat this patent, post videos of homemade workers that work on compressed air and water pressure. I did not delve into the technical characteristics, maybe there is some advantage over blade turbines.
N. Tesla has another interesting invention in the field of gas movement - a valve, which he presented in 1916:
Tesla valve model and its diagram. The principle of operation is that in one direction the valve will conduct the flow of air or water with less resistance, and in the other direction, vice versa. This is due to the side channels. When the flow is stratified into these channels, it swirls and creates resistance to the main one. Whereas in the other direction the channels are not involved.
Details about the operation of the Tesla valve are shown in this video:
But the authors could not understand why the valve works the other way around. Perhaps the whole point is that the Tesla valve is designed to operate in a pulsed mode, or at very high flow rates. And in a laminar, quiet mode, it looks more like a gas or water reducer that only regulates the flow rate.
The advantage of this reducer valve is that there are no moving parts, no springs, no gate valves. There is nothing to break. You just need to learn more about its mechanics. And maybe at high gas velocities it behaves like a flow muffler.
Where can this construction by N. Tesla be applied? I think in sound mufflers with high-speed movement of gases. For example, in more efficient silencers for gas powered tools:
And also in compact mufflers of exhaust gases in auto and motorcycle transport.
Similar designs are used in weapon silencers:
Something like a Tesla valve. This design is also effective for damping sound during high-speed gas flow.
Can be used wherever it is necessary to extinguish the speed of water flow. For example, in staged cascades of spillways and culverts in dam hydroelectric power plants. Together with the steps of artificial waterfalls. They also write that it can be used in micropumps and pulsating jet engines for aircraft models.
