What did I make lathe cutters for wood and how can I make a handle for such a cutter
Greetings.
Not long ago I was talking about my new assistant in the workshop - a small lathe. You can view the machine look here.
Naturally, in order to fully work on such a machine, cutters are needed.
You can buy them, but many people prefer to do it on their own and, in my opinion, the most accessible material for cutters is old files.
I made several of these incisors, I have already made handles for a couple. It remains to carve handles for the rest. It is also a good reason to practice turning.
For the handles, I took a bar of 40x40 mm with a section.
First, I carved a cylinder out of a block. He worked with a large semicircular cutter for rough work.
Next, I marked the boundaries of the handle. A suitable handle size for a lathe tool is about 30 cm. (the workpiece is used a little more ~ 34-36 cm)
Further, the shape of the handle is already machined: rounding at the edges, narrowing in the middle, a cylinder for a metal ring from the side of the cutter. I sharpened the cylinder for the ring with a straight chisel.
I used a piece of a broken water tap as a ring.
It is convenient to screw such a ring onto the handle.
After installing the ring, I again clamp the handle in the machine and then make a smooth bevel to the beginning of the handle.
After that, the handle is sanded and waxed.
Next, I saw off the protruding parts and insert the cutter.
You can also see how this was done in the video clip.
