Experience in building a house from a rounded log using the SHIP-PAZ system!
Since childhood, I dreamed of learning how to build wooden houses, like my father and grandfather had! And now several decades have passed, and I am professionally engaged in the construction of such houses!
Recently we assembled a house from a rounded log using a thorn-groove system. We named this project "Jupiter". I want to share with you photos of different stages of construction of this house, I will tell you why you chose the “thorn-groove”, and show you what we did!
Rounded log houses are a classic in timber construction! They are being built without a single nail, and look like they came from the pages of fairy tales of princes and princesses. Rounded logs are an improved version of regular logs. They have perfect fit, the same length and diameter throughout the length. The technology for assembling houses from circular logs has been verified to the millimeter.
Stages of preparation for the construction of a house from a rounded log:
1. Drafting a project. It is impossible to do without it, since the production of rounded logs is a delicate process. Any deviation from the dimensions can lead to assembly difficulties. And the project will give us information about the number and size of the logs.
2. Production of rounded logs according to the specified characteristics. For the production of rounded logs, a round billet is used. At the plant, the trunks are cleaned of bark, checked for the presence of a wormhole, and passed through machines with a given diameter of 15 to 50 cm. Then docking bowls are made in them and treated with antiseptics.
Docking bowls have several varieties:
Lunar
Finnish
Thorn groove
During the construction of "Jupiter" we used a thorn-groove section. Let me explain why:
- Thorn-groove, in contrast to the lunar section, is a more modern, reliable and practical way of connecting logs.
- It is ideal for the northern regions of the country.
- The joints of the spike-groove logs are as tight as possible. No cracks remain between the logs.
- They have a wide thermal lock.
- Walls built of rounded logs according to the thorn-groove system keep heat better than others and do not let the wind through.
- Houses made of rounded logs, connected by a thorn-groove system, shrink, like others. But unlike the lunar and Finnish grooves, the shrinkage is more even.
After the preparatory work, you can start building the house. First, the calculation and laying of the foundation are made. Timber houses are not too heavy, so a shallow foundation will do. A layer of waterproofing and a backing board are placed on it.
Then the walls are erected according to the project. After the end of the assembly of the log house, it is left to shrink.
For a year, a house made of rounded logs can shrink 5-10 cm. This is taken into account in the project in advance. Another advantage of log houses is that after shrinkage it can always be adjusted. If the corner suddenly sags, or other flaws appear, this can be corrected.
