We sharpen drills. Three simple rules for sharp sharpening without special tools
How often I meet craftsmen, and just people who use the tool, but when the drill gets dull (and it will definitely dull), they just throw it away. Because it is completely inconvenient and unprofitable to find a sharpening specialist, carry drills to him and come back. It takes more time and money than it's worth.
But you can also sharpen drills at home. The main thing is to follow a few basic rules. Only then will it be possible to get a good result. You don't need special tools for sharpening. Emery is enough. Well, or grinders.
In order for the sharpening to be of high quality, it is important that several requirements are met:
The sharpening angle should be approximately 120 °.
The area of the drill at the back must be sharpened harder than the cutting edge.
The cutting edges must be the same length.
Let's move on to the technique!
1. The first rule worth mentioning is - observance of the angle of inclination. For this, the cutting edge must be brought to the grindstone so that an angle of 60 ° is created between the drill and the emery wheel. In this case, the cutting edge should be parallel to the guide.
Having quite a lot of experience, I am already doing this work without additional marks - by eye. But I still recommend using a protractor. In order to avoid mistakes and maintain the correct angle of inclination, measure and draw a line on the handcuff.
After sharpening one cutting edge, move on to the other. To do this, you need to rotate the drill, leaving the position of the hands the same.
2. The next important step is grinding the back of the drill. To do this, you need to take a drill in the area of the cutting element. We hold the shank with the other hand. At the moment of lowering the shank down, the correct grinding of the drill takes place, at which the desired profile is formed.
If you put the drill exactly on the handguard, then tilting it, the drill will scroll along a spiral path. This should not be allowed. Therefore, it is necessary to hold the drill with your finger, and use it to lean on the handguard. At the same time, no one canceled safety precautions! Be careful!
3. Moving on to checking the equality of the shelves. To avoid beating, it is important to determine before using the drill are the shelves equal or not. If there are differences, it is worth refining the shelves until their dimensions are equal. For control, you should use either a ruler or a template. With experience, it already turns out to be done by eye. But novice "grinders" should not immediately trust the eye.
If you, like me, do not like the fact that drills are becoming disposable devices, extend their life using my advice. Sharpening will be "sharp" and clear. And the drills will serve until the state of "cigarette butts".
