If you cover the roof with slate and leave it alone, it will last for many years. The only thing that will happen to it over the years is that it will darken and be covered with moss. But this often does not happen. After all, there are a lot of external factors that negatively affect the roof. For example, a large city. And the person himself can climb onto the roof and damage it.

Several years ago I was visiting my grandfather. I climbed onto the roof in order to put the cap on the pipe. As a result, he accidentally stepped on a wave, resulting in a hole. It had to be repaired.

Grandfather suggested covering it with concrete. But he himself said that such "patches" do not last long. In winter they will crack. We decided to look for another way.

At work, I intersect with different specialists. Somehow they worked in the neighborhood with the guys who are engaged in roofing. The specialists are excellent. I had a phone number, which I used safely.

And this is what a professional roofer advised me.

Before proceeding with the repair of the hole, the surface around it must be thoroughly cleaned with a metal brush.

He went on to offer three options:

1. Use a sealant. Silicone, polyurethane, bituminous - any, except acrylic. But still it is preferable - silicone.

You can take a dense, for example, denim fabric, coat with sealant on all sides and make a patch on the slate. If the crack is more noticeable, you can cover it with gypsum plaster on the underside, and once it seizes, treat it with a sealing agent.

2. For repairing large holes you can use glass insulationand a burner. It works, he says, flawlessly.

3. Or apply sealing bitumen-polymer or butyl-rubber tape. They are sold in hardware stores, they come in different sizes and even colors. This tape can be used not only for roofing repairs, it is combined with many other materials. It is convenient to work with it - you cut off a piece of the desired size and glue it (it is better to warm it up with a hairdryer beforehand, so the grip will be better). Then put on the crack, press well and iron.
