How does an antique wooden door lock work?

Calling such a castle "old" is probably not entirely correct, since such are used and made to this day. Of course, they do not have such a wide application in the world as before, and they are made by private craftsmen. Such locks are still used in England by farmers and are installed in barns, cattle pens and other outbuildings.

This is how it looks like. This is a typical simple design of a wooden lock.

And here is the key itself, which today usually hangs on a rope next to the lock itself. Although before, of course, the keys were carried with them.

Many will probably have a question, really the British cannot buy themselves a modern castle, why use this rarity and from whom can it protect?

Of course, a normal lock can be bought and bought where it is really needed. The use of such old castles by English farmers is rather a tribute to culture and a show of respect for tradition. Even in the most modern farm, there is always a shed or cattle corral, which is closed with such a lock.

It is believed that such a rarity protects the farm and livestock from various troubles. For the British, this is something like our horseshoe over the doorframe, but unlike the horseshoe, the lock has a practical value and really closes))

The device of this miracle is similar to a modern castle. It has a wooden casing in which grooves for locking pins are cut. The bolt also has cutouts for the pins. In the closed position, the pins are lowered and the bolt is locked, as shown in the photo.

Now we insert a key into the hole, which of course is made for a specific lock.

With the help of the hand with the help of a key, we lift the locking pins and release the bolt. This is how the lock opens.

The photo shows the simplest design, but at the time of the active use of this miracle, there were more complex designs that involved the displacement of the pins along several axes.

The British believe that such a castle is their national invention, which was invented by a monk in one of the monasteries in Wales. The design was so popular that it filled the whole of Europe and even got to Russia.

However, there is information that claims that this is an invention of the Scandinavian Vikings, others say that the Slavs invented it.
