New technology: vertical timber houses. Pros and cons
This technology for building houses appeared relatively recently and its pros and cons are still little known, because the service life is extremely short and the examples of houses themselves are very few. In the west, this technology is called Naturi. Despite this, something can be said about this technology right away. First, about the pros.
The main goal pursued by designers and builders using the vertical arrangement of the timber is the absence of shrinkage of the structure. The tree shrinks across the grain. Therefore, houses from a bar are recommended to stand for a year and then start finishing. But such a house will still noticeably sit down for several more years.
Houses made of laminated veneer lumber do not have this drawback. There the wood is dried before processing. But their disadvantage is the limited wall thickness. Such houses may not pass according to thermal performance indicators in a certain climate.
But the walls of houses from a vertical bar can be built of any thickness. This is the second plus of this technology. The bar has a profile, the bar adheres to each other and you can dial any wall thickness. A finishing profile board is installed outside and inside.
There are no cuts in the corners. And in the classical scheme (thorn-groove, in the paw), through the corners in the log houses - there is a lot of heat loss.
Another positive side of the technology - the construction of houses is carried out without insulation, jute. Immediately finished. And, of course, the speed of building houses. It is higher than that of houses using frame and other technologies.
Let's move on to the disadvantages of this technology. The first and most important thing for the consumer is the cost of such material. It is higher than profiled and glued beams due to the increased wall thickness. The vertical bar still needs to be dried in the chambers (otherwise large gaps in the walls are formed) and cut into each profile, which is more complicated than a profiled bar. The manufacturer needs to have special equipment with complex geometry for cutters.
There are many voids inside the wall. These are great places for insects and rodents to live. Ants and mice, if they get inside the log house, will live there permanently. In this way, this material is very similar to frame houses.
Building a house alone using this technology is also not so easy. The vertical bar must be lifted and installed to the adjacent bar, then drilled and fastened with dowels.
But the finishing boards will have to be inserted vertically. And in places to score.
Russian manufacturers of profiled and glued timber have developed their own fastening system and named it Twin Beam:
This is almost all the same glued and profiled timber, but fastened with bars with a complex profile (W-shaped bar). The bars are inserted vertically and hammered into pieces. I think this is a more affordable technology. There is no need to purchase profiled boards for finishing. Although, it is also not without its drawbacks - air locks inside the wall (to compensate for moisture expansion). But, if you want thick walls made of wood, then you can turn to this option.
A video summarizing the benefits of this technology. The cost of such a house is 7 million rub. on UWB (information in the next video).
Now let's count. The average price for glued beams is from 25 thousand / m3. Aerated concrete - 5 thousand / m3. With the same wall thickness of 400 mm, the cost of a house box will be 4-5 times higher. Yes, aerated concrete walls need reinforcement, glue or glue-foam, plaster and paint. The facade of a wooden house must also be covered. High-quality impregnations are as expensive as facade paints.
I believe that if this technology appears among manufacturers, it will only be for the sake of a desire to stand out from the background of many other proposals.
