How to lay an electrician in a house from self-supporting insulated wire: common methods
SIP wiring: three compliant cable routing options
SIP houses, or houses made of SIP panels are popular with developers. In addition to questions: how much does it cost to build a turnkey SIP house, what is the price of a house from SIP panels and where to get self-supporting insulated wire project at home, people are interested in how to properly lay an electric cable on structurally insulated panels.
FORUMHOUSE has studied the information on the Internet and on the portal and offers you 3 proven ways to install electrical wiring in a house from SIP panels.
SIP house: the difficulties of laying electrical cables
Let's remind that the self-supporting insulated wire house is a pre-fabricated dwelling, which is assembled from structurally insulated panels. SIP panel is a composite material consisting of three layers:
- OSB sheet (OSB) - oriented strand board.
- Expanded polystyrene PPS - heat insulating layer.
- OSB sheet (OSB) - oriented strand board.
SIP panels are manufactured at the factory and brought to the construction site as a finished product.
It turns out that the SIP house is a kind of frame in the form of a house kit. The "bottleneck" of houses made of self-supporting insulated panels is their imaginary increased fire hazard. We have already talked about this "horror story" in the material - 6 myths about SIP houses that we will refute or confirm. Link to it at the end of this article. But this does not mean that in a house made of structurally insulated panels, in fact: a structure made of wood (OSB) and foam, electrical wiring can be done as you want.
Building materials according to GOST 30244-94 have a classification according to the flammability group: G1 (slightly flammable), G2 (moderately flammable), G3 (normally flammable), G4 (highly flammable).
The flammability group of OSB boards is G4. To reduce the flammability of OSB, fire retardants are used - substances that reduce the flammability of the material.
Let us refer to the PUE (Electrical Installation Rules), which says that to conduct electrical wiring on wood combustible structures, and SIP refers to them, it is possible only in a metal pipe. The opinion that these requirements are already outdated, we will give below, and now we will tell you how to conduct an electric cable with an internal socket in the SIP panel according to PUE.
How to make electrical wiring in a house from SIP panels
There are 3 main ways to mount an electrical cable in a self-supporting insulated wire house:
1. Outside laying of cables in a self-supporting insulated wire (self-supporting insulated wire) in cable ducts and in an open way - with a wire along the walls.
This method is a classic version, well known to the owners of wooden houses. Pros of open wiring:
- The cable is always in sight.
- The condition of the wiring is easy to visually monitor.
- The cable is easy to replace.
- High speed of installation.
- Cheapness.
Disadvantages - Not everyone likes to look at open wiring in the interior.
2. Concealed cable routing in a rock wool layer under drywall, mounted on galvanized profiles.
The main disadvantage of this method is a decrease in the usable area in the rooms.
3. Hidden installation of electrical wiring in a self-supporting insulated wire in a house in a layer of drywall screwed directly to the OSB.
As practice shows, this method is most popular among owners of houses built from SIP panels. And it raises the most questions. Let's tell you more about it.
SIP house: installation of a cable in a drywall layer step by step

I have a house made of SIP panels. I thought about how to make electrical wiring for structurally insulated panels. I want to hide it in a drywall layer, because the option with the installation of profiles under the gypsum board disappears. There are not many places in the house, and with them it will become even less. Questions:
- How best to lay out drywall on SIP panels.
- How to lead an electric cable in a drywall layer along a self-supporting insulated wire panel.

I heard about 2 ways of laying an electric cable in drywall in a self-supporting insulated wire. Wall pies:
- OSB - GKL 9.5 mm thick - GKL 12 mm thick. The second layer of drywall is grooved. A cable is laid in the grooves. Then the gypsum board is plastered and wallpaper is glued.
- The cable is laid alongOSB, then 12 mm thick drywall sheets are screwed close to the cable. Then everything is closed with a second layer of gypsum board. The walls are plastered and painted. The advantage of the method is that there is no need to make grooves, but it turns out that the electric cable is laid directly along the OSB, i.e. on a combustible base. How to be?
We add that one more disadvantage of the second method is the high labor intensity. Imagine for a minute how workers will be able to cut and feed sheets of gypsum board to a cable already laid on OSB boards?
A step-by-step diagram for installing an electrical cable in a drywall layer based on the experience of FORUMHOUSE users:
1. Tape the joints in the self-adhesive boards with self-adhesive vapor barrier tape.
2. Use a stapler to nail the substrate under the laminate with a thickness of 3 mm on the SIP panel and fix the first layer of drywall with a thickness of 9.5 mm with self-tapping screws using special screwdriver bits.
3. Fasten the second layer of drywall, 12.5 mm thick, on the walls of the self-supporting insulated wire and make grooves for laying the electrical cable in it, without cutting through the first layer of gypsum board. After cutting the strobes, lay the eclectic cable in them. Putty and reinforce all joints so that they don't crack.

I believe that fire safety is the top priority in home decoration. See, in the installation diagram above, the first layer of gypsum board is a protective spacer between the cable and the self-supporting insulated wire wall. The cable itself is laid in a gate and covered with plaster. So we comply with the electrical safety requirements of the PUE in wooden houses. Take a flat cable - VVGng-Ls. Drill out the passages in SIP panels for cables, fill them with gypsum assembly glue. After drying, make holes in it for pulling the cable. Rule: there must be at least 1 cm of gypsum between the cable and the combustible substrate. Lay cables with a cross-section of more than 2.5 mm in a metal pipe with a wall thickness corresponding to the cable cross-section according to the PUE.
How to mount socket boxes in SIP panels and how to make grooves in gypsum plasterboard
We figured out how to lay an electric cable in a self-supporting insulated wire (GKL). Now we will tell you how to mount an internal socket in a self-supporting insulated wire panel.
The principle is the same - the socket must be insulated from the foam with a non-combustible material - gypsum plaster.
Method step by step:
- Drill gypsum sheets and SIP panels with a crown. Take the height and diameter of the crown 2 cm more than the height of the socket.
- In the CIP panel, in the foam, a cavity is obtained, which needs to be slightly expanded with a brush for the grinder.
So you will increase the volume of the internal cavity in the SIP panel, which you then fill with plaster mortar and sink the socket into it.
- The result is a gypsum "fungus" that will securely hold the socket in the foam of the CIP panel and at the same time isolate the socket from the combustible material.
You can choose a groove in a drywall sheet with a roller cutter installed in a drill.
Or with the help of a "renovator" - a multifunctional device and a special attachment, which is much faster than making strobes with a knife.
SIP house and an electrician in it: a modern method of installation
Interesting opinion, a member of the portal with a nickname Oldvist. The FORUMHOUSE user believes that the requirements of the PUE are outdated long ago and the main thing is to install a security group in the house.

The requirements of the PUE, in my opinion, are stuck in the Middle Ages. There are many electrical protection devices on the market now, so I don't understand why sticking cables in metal pipes. SlabsOSB, if they burn, then only in the presence of oxygen, but where does it come from under a layer of plaster? In the SIP house, I installed VVG-ng cables with self-extinguishing insulation. From the electrical panel to each room there are routes to sockets and lighting, protected by automatic machines. There are several pieces of RCD and UZM-51M in the shield, which monitors the voltage in the network and, in case of going beyond the range, turns off the whole house. I covered the SIP walls with one layer of drywall 12.5 mm thick. Under it is a 5 mm thick foam polyethylene backing. I cut the grooves in the GKL with a knife to the OSB. I put a corrugation with a diameter of 16 mm in the groove, now I understand that it is not needed there at all. The wiring is in the corrugation. I put putty on top. The socket boxes were drowned in 2 cm foam. The putty is not there. Abroad, wireframes are used to lay the wiring directly through wooden posts, without wiring the cables into concrete or pulling them through metal pipes.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Below we will summarize how to lay electrics in SIP houses and how to prevent a fire due to electrical faults in SIP panels.
conclusions
