What houses in the center of Porto look like: not everything in Europe is beautiful and well-groomed
Europe is synonymous with luxury, style and stately architecture. But all this is not everywhere. Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, can shock the tourist from the very first minutes. I was in Porto in November 2019 and am still impressed by what I saw.
I flew to Porto by plane and got to the city by metro. When I got off at the station in front of the central part of the city, I saw houses that looked like gaudy buildings in Russia. In the very center (on the main streets), the situation has changed. But the streets that adjoin them amazed me. The houses are covered with mold, painted with graffiti and everything is very unkempt.
Here you can see how the locals live: very poor. I heard about unemployment in Portugal, but I didn’t think it was that bad. The tourism sector is well developed here, but in general the economic situation here is much worse than, for example, in Spain. And food prices are about the same.
Walking here was scary, although the very center of Porto is a two-minute walk from this street. Locals often dry their clothes on their balconies and proudly hang their flags. Here people do not complain about their situation: they either leave for other countries to earn money, or they simply "adapt" to the situation.
I walked a few more streets, but saw nothing new. The houses are just as scary and neglected. There are many places where paint peels off, but there is no money for repairs.
If you look at the houses in Porto from the observation decks, they look pretty. Still, there is something beautiful about this neglect. This may attract tourists, but if you think that people live in such conditions all their lives, it becomes sad.
