House on stumps. 60 years after construction

Our subscriber shared his story of foundation repair with us.

I live in an ordinary log house. Since its construction, the house has been gradually sinking into the ground. It's time to repair the foundation and replace the lower rims that have rotted away.

Just during the renovation, an interesting fact emerged - the house is not on a slag-cast foundation, as it seemed before, but on natural wooden posts. Having studied, subsequently, this topic, I realized that earlier it was a very common method of construction.

The essence of the method lies in the fact that logs of large diameter and the most tarnished are selected, or larch is generally used. Such columns, from 80 to 150 centimeters long, were buried in the corners of the house and in the middle of long walls, then on these columns the frame of the house itself was put up, and the space between the log and the ground was covered with slag, earth or other material that preserves warmly. This method was built even in the last century, mainly due to the lack of materials.

My house stood on such posts for about 60 years. During this time, almost all the pillars have rotted and turned into dust, only one of the pillars is very well preserved. I believe that this construction method altogether is a thing of the past. Its main disadvantages are the relative fragility, the complexity of the selection and competent processing of the necessary wood, certain requirements for the soil: if the site is close to groundwater and high soil moisture, then the columns will rot enough fast.

In the modern world, wooden posts can be replaced with brick posts, screw or bored piles. Can wooden posts be used? It seems to me yes, subject to certain conditions for simple and not very demanding buildings such as sheds, garages, outbuildings, it may well fit.
