Do you want to grow strong Onion bulbs without financial costs? A few simple tips will help you with this
Growing large onions is half the battle; it is also important to preserve the harvest. When agricultural technology, you need to take into account two of these tasks at once, if the goal is not to get only a green feather.
Before planting, I fertilize the soil so that the bulbs not only drive out feathers and arrows, but also form into new onions.
For this:
● I put a bucket of humus on the square of plantings;
● from mineral fertilizers you need 10 grams of ammonium nitrate and potassium sulfate, 20 grams of superphosphate and a half-liter jar of ash;
Important: onions love sulfur, but cannot tolerate chlorine, so potassium chloride will not work as a replacement, it is better to abandon it altogether. It is advisable to refuse fresh manure too.
Our soil is clayey, so from time to time we have to throw sand or peat into the garden when digging.
The next thing to do before planting is to soak the bulbs in a weak solution of potassium permanganate in order to disinfect, 15 minutes will be enough. From an onion fly, it will help to lower the onions into a salty solution (a kilogram for half a bucket of water)
Germination is accelerated if the tops of the onions are cut off, it immediately becomes active, drives out more greenery and grows better.
After landing
In the first half of the growing season, onions are especially picky about moisture in the soil, the rosettes are more powerful, the bulbs develop more actively. If possible, you can carry out drip irrigation on the onion bed.
Planting onions is ideal, alternating with carrots. These two plants inhibit pests that settle on them: onions kill carrot flies, carrots scare off onions. I do not plant the bed around the edges, but simply alternate planting in narrow strips.
When the first 2-3 feathers appeared, I additionally water the plantings with slurry, there is a lot of nitrogen in it for the formation of greenery.
The second time I feed it in a couple of weeks, already with a complex fertilizer, in which all three main elements are:
● 5 grams of potassium / 30 superphosphate / 10 urea I dissolve in a bucket;
- I water the onions with the same mixture in early July for the third time.
Phosphorus cannot be neglected, it is the key to large healthy onions.
Harvesting onions
It is better not to delay cleaning. The neighbors insist that the bulbs should grow as much as possible, and wait for the green part to settle down in the garden. Their onions are really larger, but they do not last long.
I remove it until the rains fall. On dry days of the second half of summer, the tips of mature greenery begin to turn yellow, which means it's time to clean up. Pulling out the bow is half the battle.
No need to be greedy and cut off the feather. Drying onions will draw out all the nutrients from it and ripen.
I keep the harvest hanging in pigtails in a warm closet. Leave the onion in the cold - let it form flower buds. Such bulbs will give arrows next season.
