Tortured Netherflowers on Cucumbers? Personally proven way to get rid of the problem and get a record Harvest
Cucumbers seem to be such a simple vegetable: I stuck a seed into the ground - and it crunched with a fresh cucumber in a month and a half, the main thing is to choose an early variety.
And so they grow, bloom, but there is nothing to crunch. The empty flower problem is not new, and modern varieties throw surprise after surprise.
I will say right away: you cannot cut off male flowers in the hope that the plant will urgently give out a wave of female flowers! Once I made this mistake, and when the cucumber did give out what I wanted, not a single male flower with pollen was found on the whole vine!
What is the stubborn person missing? We check:
● seeds lay down before planting (freshly harvested seeds have a large number of male inflorescences)
● seedlings sit quite rarely, they have enough territory;
● the place for the garden is sunny;
What mistakes can affect the formation of ovaries?
1. The most popular mistake in my experience is the passion for organic feeding. Once I myself, out of fear of nitrates, tried to use only manure with compost - and fell into my own trap. Fresh humus contains a lot of nitrogen.
It is not enough that nitrates are formed from it, in addition, it only helps to grow green mass, and there is nothing to form cucumber ovaries from. He happily grows leaves and stems, not intending to please with the harvest.
Solution one: gnawed plants need to be urgently transferred to fertilizers with potassium and phosphorus, so that the fruits are formed. He does not store an excess of these fertilizers, he takes as much as needed. Dilute mineral fertilizers according to the instructions on the package.
2. Cold and cold watering takes away hope for a good harvest. The cucumber will not form female flowers.
The salvation is to stop watering if the temperature is kept at 15 C and below. Under stress conditions, cucumbers still tend to multiply at all costs and form a mass of female flowers.
3. The problem may be in poor quality seeds or too fresh. Their own seeds are unpredictable, and the young produce many barren flowers.
Just in case, before sowing, it would be good to hold them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, then dry and hold in a warm place where it keeps 25-28 C, for example, behind a refrigerator or next to batteries for about month.
4. Interestingly, the summer heat sterilizes the pollen, and the plant stops forming ovaries.
Watering twice a day will be a salvation, the water evaporates and cools the plantings.
Many gardeners do not seek to understand the causes of whims, but simply create additional stress for them, for example, pour them with settled water and soda (2 tablespoons per bucket). They say the results are great, but I haven't tested it yet.
My surest way is to cut off the stem of the male flowers and let the cucumber form a couple of side shoots. After such a shock, these shoots are strewn with female flowers and do not shed the ovaries, so there are enough cucumbers for salads and in jars.
