Proven feed for Hosts, thanks to which they grow into Lush growth. Enjoy the exquisite Compositions of these Plants
Khosta in natural conditions is a plant of a forest belt. She is used to competing for nutrients and responds very well to feeding.
At the same time, it is not required to feed it according to a difficult regimen; there are only differences in the care of transplanted hosts and plants that have already taken root in a new place.
How to feed a host during a transplant
Hosta roots grow in breadth, I dig holes for them twice, or even three times wider than the roots of young plants. I loosen the earth in the hole, throw out all the pebbles, extraneous roots from there, and be sure to add complex fertilizer in granules.
It can be a fertilizer for flowering, the main thing is that it contains phosphorus with potassium. Nitrogen in mineral fertilizers does not last long, and it will not be enough for the entire season in any case.
In order to feed the plant with nitrogen, I prepare in advance the rotted manure of the 2nd or 3rd year. Compost fertilizers and rotting foliage are great - they will all release nitrogen gradually.
I add to each hole:
● a couple of handfuls of humus or other organic matter;
● a tablespoon with a slide of mineral fertilizer for flowering;
I mix all these substances with the soil from the hole so that the roots do not burn, and I plant the plants.
I mulch with peat on top and immediately spill it thoroughly with water. The nutrient supply is sufficient for good rooting and growth all summer long.
How I look after adult blooming hosts
I feed adult hosts several times a season, the last time in mid-August. Usually they talk about four dressings, but in fact I often have two, and I don't notice that the hosts demand more. The host does not require special handling, general schemes are suitable for it.
1. The first feeding is carried out in the spring, when the flowers start to grow, it must be nitrogen. It is good to water the hosta with a solution of ammonia or add humus to the root, but I can't always manage to make it with the first feeding.
2. The next top dressing should be in late May or early June. It is advisable to feed with complex fertilizer: the hosta really needs phosphorus with potassium for long flowering.
The easiest way is to take a ready-made fertilizer with trace elements, in which everything has already been selected in an optimal way for flowers and diluted according to the instructions.
3. For the third time in August, fertilizer with potassium and phosphorus is applied. You can interfere with potassium salts and superphosphates yourself, or take azophoska. You need to proceed from about 20 grams of granules per bucket of water. I pour half a bucket on the plant, in my experience it is no longer needed.
It is best to fertilize hosts before 11 am or after rain.
Foliar top dressing works best on the underside of the leaves.
Under large hosts, fertilizer should be poured wider, since the roots of it scatter in all directions.
And the most important thing is not to fertilize the hosta later than mid-August, otherwise the stimulated plant will try to continue growing instead of preparing for wintering.
