Features of traditional Japanese houses: why paper walls
As you know, earthquakes often occur in Japan. Practical Japanese believe that it makes no sense to rebuild expensive stone houses, which, due to the cataclysm, will not only fall apart, but also buried under the rubble of living people. Prefabricated frame houses are the traditional housing of this country.
Mobile, active and nature-loving Japanese people show these qualities in architecture. Meet the shoji.
What it is
Sliding partition doors in the form of wooden slats covered with rice paper are called shoji. The virtues of these doors are the reason for their popularity.
Shoji pros
1. Versatility.
Slatted frames can serve as both doors and windows, giving the home owner complete freedom of action. I often think that it would be nice to make redevelopment in the apartment, but how much trouble with these matters... And in Japan it's done.
2. Mobility.
These thin walls ride on special hinges. They can be placed anywhere between the columns that are the base of the house. Also, if desired, shoji can be easily pulled out of the grooves - this is useful for owners of a beautiful garden, because with movable walls the Japanese can enjoy beautiful views at any time. In Russian conditions it is difficult to imagine, of course.
3. Light scattering.
Bright daylight, meeting the paper walls, becomes soft and does not hit the eyes. I think that in such a house it will not be dull and dark even on a cloudy day.
4. Ventilation.
Thin walls perfectly allow air from the street, while minimizing unpleasant odors, being an excellent filter.
5. Noise isolation.
Of course, paper walls cannot completely drown out street noise, but they are quite capable of making it quieter.
Shoji can be doors, walls, or windows.
