Gladioli are luxurious flowers that adorn flower beds from mid-summer until frost. In order to obtain a lush and bright flowering, the bulb must be properly prepared for planting and germinated.

Despite the fact that gladiolus is a perennial, in the middle lane it is grown as an annual. In the fall, the bulbs are dug up and stored in a cool and dry place. Proper storage is the main condition for successful flowering next season.

Preparing bulbs for germination

1. Three weeks before disembarking, I take the boxes of bulbs out of the basement and do an audit. Each onion should be peeled. This will provoke the plant to develop buds, and also makes it possible to check the condition of each bulb.

2. Very often, signs of disease can appear on the surface. If the bulb is covered with dark spots, then it is infected, it is not worth planting it, otherwise the disease will spread to all plants. In cases where the bulbs are very valuable, and it is a pity to throw away the planting material, it is worth trying to revive the plant.

All rotten parts are cut off with a sterile knife, and the planting material is kept in a solution of fungicide or potassium permanganate. These bulbs should be planted separately and stored in a separate container.

Perhaps they will not bloom, but the chances of protecting a rare variety are quite high.

3. Do not wet the bulbs during germination. Such actions can provoke too vigorous growth, which will lead to damage during planting.

4. I place all the bulbs in a warm place. Do not place gladioli in direct sunlight. This will provoke overgrowth. In this mode, gladioli can be stored for up to two months.

5. 2-3 days before planting, you can put the bulbs on a damp cloth. The roots will begin to develop faster.

6. Before planting, I soak gladioli in a special solution. In 10 liters of water, I dilute a tablespoon of ammonium nitrate, a small amount of potassium permanganate and a teaspoon of boric acid. I add a solution of copper sulfate. I dissolve this substance separately in water.

7. I fill all the bulbs with a solution, let them stand for 30 minutes and plant them in a permanent place.

8. To protect against pests, the bulbs can be treated with garlic infusion. For this purpose, 300 g of garlic is chopped and 1 liter of warm water is poured. I soak Gladioli in this solution for 2 hours.

9. Plants can also be soaked in a growth promoter. For this purpose, chemicals are diluted in water according to package directions.

Secrets of successful flowering

In order to get continuous flowering of gladioli in a flower bed, it is worth planting the bulbs in batches, with an interval of 14 days. Also, do not forget about the features of each variety.

The bulb should have a smooth and even surface, free from mold and strange stains. Only good planting material will produce good flowering.

If the bulb has two buds, leave one, stronger. This will produce a stronger sprout. Bulbs that are too large can be cut in two.
