Do-it-yourself deepened greenhouse for a year-round harvest

click fraud protection

Not the most common version of greenhouses due to the complexity of its construction. But I would call this construction, to some extent, underestimated in our climatic zone. After all, some crops can be grown inside it from early spring to late autumn. And with a certain heating and lighting in mild winters - all year round.

A greenhouse buried in the ground has several advantages over a ground one. It is warmer at night and in spring and autumn the temperature inside it is much higher than in the terrestrial version. Early and late harvests can be grown in it (two harvests of some crops).

And with heating by a stove and additional lighting - to grow crops year-round. In the southern regions of the country, it is definitely possible.

In short, the construction process looks like this: we dig a pit to the desired size. In the photo: 3x4m. Concrete pillars or make a foundation for walls (this is better). We install a homemade frame made of polypropylene pipes.

Supports are needed for polyethylene pipes. With this in mind, it is better to buy a purchased version of the frame, from a profile galvanized pipe - then props are not needed. Anyone who has a pipe bender for the manufacture of canopy and greenhouse frames - the task is simplified. We make a descent (stairs) and a blind area for drainage (or collection) of rainwater.

It is better to lay out the walls from blocks. Concrete will heat up during the day and give off heat at night. Heat storage effect. There will be a more even microclimate. It is also waterproofing from melt and rainwater. For growing in winter, polycarbonate needs 10 mm or two thinner layers. A recessed greenhouse can also be built with timber joists. But the wood frame definitely needs props. Be sure to consider the snow load.

Cons of a buried greenhouse: construction cost: digging by hand is laborious, an excavator is needed. Laying blocks of walls, comparable to the construction of a country house.

In winter, there is low illumination (only onions will grow in the greenhouse, if without additional lighting), in summer it is poorly ventilated and in spring there is a risk of flooding with melt water.

In winter in such a greenhouse it will not work without additional lighting to grow tomatoes and cucumbers (they are light-loving). Only greens. And the cost of lighting must be counted.

All these details need to be calculated and thought out. I believe that it makes sense to build such a greenhouse if you are going to sell crops. Well, and the most important question is winter heating:

To increase the efficiency of heating, it is necessary to run the chimney through the entire length of the building. And make the air intake outside. I'll tell you about heating in the next part.

Or, bury the stove in the ground and run the chimney under the ground. If the stove is brick, then this will further increase the heat transfer from the wood. In winter, several barrels of manure can be placed in such a greenhouse to generate biogas - this will slightly reduce heating costs.

If someone uses such a greenhouse, tell us about your experience in the comments: what are you growing, what are the costs.
