How else to use a flexible bit extender
Due to the inconvenience and cramped conditions, installers, assemblers, finishers and builders have to tweak from time to time using non-standard devices for tightening self-tapping screws and other fasteners. One of them - flexible extension for screwdriver bits, which may have a different shape and length. I also use such a flexible shaft and will share what it is and what else it can do besides tightening the screws.
Device and dimensions
This specimen has good flexibility, it can even bend into a ring with a full connection of opposite ends. The end that is inserted into the screwdriver has a hexagon that matches the size and shape of the hexagon of the bit, and the other end is equipped magnetic flare head for hexagon. There is no mechanical bit retainer on this model. Maybe it’s true, it’s not on the others either, I’m not sure.
Important! The outer casing is made of rather durable plastic and due to the fact that it is not flat, but segmented and three-dimensional, this allows you to securely hold the extension cord in your hand when working. Inside the casing passes steel cable, about 6 mm in diameter (this is by eye and by sensation, since it is closed).
The length of this particular extension cord is exactly 30 cm. You can put it anywhere and in any way, even in your pocket.
What else can you do with a flexible extension cord
Tried a thing like this to work with self-tapping screws for wood, it turns out not bad. However, practice has shown that it is better to put the shortest bits in the head, since the longer the bit, the more backlash during rotation and the bit often flies off the splines.
I also tried to screw metal screws into UD and CD metal profiles when installing the ceiling frame under drywall and it turned out to be done only on a reinforced profile, on which an uneven surface. On an ordinary flat profile, the self-tapping screw in the extension slides off, and therefore it is necessary to additionally use a core.
An excellent use case for an extension cord is twisting and unscrewing confirmations from cabinet furniture where you can't crawl with a screwdriver and screwdriver. A flexible cable allows you to reach the confirmation even on the back of furniture or to climb into a narrow cabinet with many shelves.
You can also try to adapt the flexible shaft to socket wrench. But this additionally requires adapter from hexagon to square, on which the heads will sit. You can still install the extension for the heads on the square and further expand the potential of the device.
IMPORTANT! The possibilities of an extension cord are largely limited not by its strength, but by the strength of the worker's hands. If you keep the cable out of tightness, then when the load increases, it sometimes turns into a "figure eight".
INSTEAD OF BONUS! And more recently, I found out that some women have adapted a flexible extension cord for beats under a mixer and calmly beat all kinds of things with it. That's what resourcefulness means!
In general, the product left a good impression and it seems that when tightening the screws it is better to use it with medium and low loads, since at increased loads and an inconvenient angle of attack, a bit can jump off. So a verified working position is an important point here.
That's all, friends, write, how else do you think you can use this flexible steel "snake".
