This information is more of a tip than a recommendation: why and how do I cut the leaves of cucumbers? For several years in a row I have been using this technique, it helps me to harvest earlier and longer than all my neighbors.

I want to say right away that we will talk about greenhouse varieties of cucumbers. For a long time, you will not surprise anyone with a small film greenhouse at a summer cottage. But this business has its own nuances. You can just sow cucumbers, then twine them and wait for the harvest. Or you can listen to my advice and get the result!

Cutting the lower leaves of cucumbers is optional.

Still, removing the lower leaves helps the plants:

1. Shade each other less, due to this technique, you can increase the density of plants in a row.

2. Cutting the leaves reduces the amount of vegetative biomass and allows air to circulate freely in the lower zone.

3. Removing the leaves reduces the possibility of fungal diseases due to additional ventilation.

4. A plant without lower leaves directs more nutrients to the greens. They grow faster.

I carry out the procedure in the morning, when the plant is in turgor. Thanks to this, the cuts are smooth and dry faster.

I adapted a dangerous razor blade for this “surgical intervention.

I disinfect the instrument with the usual 3% hydrogen peroxide.

You need to be very careful - the leaves are fragile and break easily.

Advice! In the axils of the removed leaf plates, break out the stepsons in the first and second pair of lower leaves. This technique accelerates the growth of ovaries and ultimately cucumbers.

I also remove the mustache, this reduces the consumption of the cucumber lash.

If you decide to follow my advice and prune cucumber leaves, don't get carried away. Cucumber vines, unlike tomatoes, react quite painfully to a large number of slices at a time.

I carry out cutting of cuttings of leaves when more than half of the lashes have already fruited. This usually happens at the end of summer.

The clearing of the leaves and the removal of the fruiting lashes carried out at this time, makes the plant start up new shoots and form new ovaries on them. Thus, my cucumbers bear fruit from early spring to late autumn.

So the question "Why am I pruning the leaves?" The answer is simple - I need cucumbers, not tops. Pruning for cucumbers is a lot of stress, and they respond to it by increasing the yield.

Now you know everything. And what to do is up to you.
