I am telling you how I rejuvenate Strawberry bushes without transplanting. The method that Grandma told me
Who doesn't love scarlet, sweet, scented garden strawberries? Growing it, in principle, is not so difficult, the main thing is to follow the basic rules. One of which says - the bushes need rejuvenation!
It is widely believed that for this they need to be transplanted. But this is not convenient in every area, and many varieties take root hard in a new place.
Luckily, my grandmother taught me how to rejuvenate strawberry bushes while keeping them in the same place! And I decided that other fans of this berry culture should also have such valuable information!
The time for the event comes 1 week after the completion of fruiting of a particular strawberry variety. You need to wait a few days for the sap flow to calm down a little in the bush, so that the plant "understands" that the growing cycle is complete.
The age of the bushes that need it is 3-5 years, again - it all depends on the variety.
The weather on this day should be clear and dry. You will need a large pruner or a sickle hoe, the metal part of the tool must be disinfected.
Gently holding the bush, I cut off its top - the stems and leaves, cutting off, in fact, the entire aerial part, but at the same time, I try not to damage the core of the bush.
Then it is imperative to sprinkle the places of the cuts with wood ash - it will, as it were, seal the "wounds" of the plant, protect it from the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms.
Further, I used to cover strawberry shortened plantings with straw or coniferous litter. The latter is preferable if there are mice on the site - they do not like its smell.
This procedure causes stress on the strawberry bush. But unlike a transplant, it has the ability to quickly begin to recover - after all, its root system is functioning fully! So if the bushes are not entirely frail, you should not worry about them, they will overwinter normally.
And in the spring - with the force multiplied many times over, they will begin to grow, increase the green mass, and, of course, form flower buds and then berry ovaries!
To help strawberries, after such rejuvenation in the spring, it is advisable to apply an increased portion of nitrogenous fertilizers.
In conclusion of the topic, I want to add that to prolong the youthfulness of strawberry bushes, I adhere to one more folk advice from my grandmother - I remove withered, damaged, diseased leaves in a timely manner, not allowing the culture to waste strength.
