I glued the tiles according to the granny's project. The idea was not even discussed

I could not refuse a friend with a request to help his aunt in local bathroom renovation. It was only necessary to lay out the tiles on one wall after it peeled off, moreover, the tiles other size. He immediately warned that control over the work would be tough, in all four eyes, and you need to be prepared for a lot uncomfortable questions, and you may also have to listen to a couple of lectures, how she famously "solved" questions with unlucky builders. In short, he came to work with the thought that he could quickly be kicked out.

The project was scrupulously thought out by the granny in advance and announced to me immediately after its appearance, as an invariable verdict!
I took pictures and filmed videos on the sly, so don't be surprised why in the video, at the end of the article, the voice is slightly frightened and muffled.

The tile stood since the times of the USSR, 30 years

, then swelled vertically in the middle of the wall and could soon collapse. Because of this, the comrade himself purposefully disassembled it. I did it almost neatly, leaving only a cut off row on the right side, which is pressed against the tiles of the other wall. He also left a row of curbs below, covering the gap between the wall and the bathroom. We had to push off from the left row, which, although crooked, but nothing can be done about it.

Preparation

First of all, I began to remove the paint found under the removed tiles, which in some places remained too much. He knocked the wall with a hatchet and a scraper with a spatula until it became obvious that the remaining malos was not at all scary.

Later, the hostess had to reconcile herself to the idea that you will also have to endure the dust from the grinder, which leveled the ends of the remaining tiles bottom horizontally and right vertically before starting laying a new one. To get a more or less even line, it was necessary to remove the remnants of old cement and fragments of knocked down tiles.

At first, everyone together coughed a little, and when the cloud of ceramic dust settled, the wall treated with a primer and gave time to dry. Fortunately, it dries quickly in the summer and had to wait only 30-40 minutes.

Old tile format 15x15 cm, and the new (Valentino-S blue) 20x30 cm, which, you see, is a little unusual. But it is good that the row of new tiles in height overlapped two rows of the old one at once and the new tile joints almost coincided with the old ones.

Main job

I glued the tile only after I had previously applied the glue to the wall with a spatula using rubbing movements. How this operation was performed is clearly shown in the video. I did this from row to row as I moved up.

I had to tinker with the laying of the first row, since it was required to put it in a level, fighting off the not quite even remaining first row. In such cases, not only crosses and wedges help, but also paper, matches, fragments of tiles, and everything that comes to hand.

On the left, at the end of the rows, it was necessary to cut off narrow strips of tiles with a tile cutter, about the same width as the old ones on the right. So it turned out more or less symmetrically. I made narrow inserts along the entire height at the very end, when I laid out the whole tile.

Worked using glue Ceresit CM11. We bought three squares of space two bags of 25 kg. Due to the curve of the wall, the material consumption was just over half a 1.5 square bag. As a result, a couple of bags of glue were left somewhere kilograms 10. Applied glue with a notched trowel wide 15 cm and tooth height 10 mm. For such work, I find this tool very convenient.

The crosses were taken 1 mm so that the width of the tile joints on the new tile was not striking and was visually close to the seams of the old model. Rubbed the seams with ordinary grout Ceresit, not moisture resistant, on which the hostess decided to save a little. I think this is justified, given the general picture of the renovation.

All the work from start to finish, along with grouting, was completed in one day. In general, the customer did not chase me away, she liked everything, she also fed me tasty and satisfying food. So all fears, as often happens, turned out to be far-fetched.

But my friend, the mistress's nephew, spent most of the day in the apartment in case I suddenly needed to be protected from a possible attack, but everything was over. Even in the morning he said: "I will be a buffer", however, when he was convinced that there was no danger, in the afternoon, having dined with me for a couple, he took leave of me and quickly ran away satisfied.

It seems that the new tiles, although larger, fit very well with the old finish and added even more color to the Soviet-style bathroom, and, of course, reasons for discussion. What can you say about this grandma's idea?
