What to do with currants in the country at the end of August. The next year's harvest is pleasantly surprising
A fiery fireworks display, fellow gardeners and happy owners of currant bushes.
Currant care at the end of August decides how successful the next year's harvest will be. Exactly after fruiting, garden plants lay flower buds, so at the end of summer I actively work in the country with currants. After reading the article to the end, you will learn useful techniques and feeding that increase yields.
Basics of basics
It's time to thank the berry bush. The worst thing that can be done with currants after fruiting is to forget about its existence and not pay attention to the plant.
First thing process the soil around the bushes:
- I remove all weeds in the near-stem circle so as not to leave conditions favorable for pests and fungal diseases of garden plants.
- Carefully I rake up already fallen, dry leaves in units. They can hide causative agents of currant ailments and various pests.
- I advise you to definitely do looseningso that oxygen flows to the roots. After summer precipitation, a crust probably remained on the ground. It is necessary to loosen under the currants carefully, without damaging the roots.
Advice: Along with loosening, immediately make a circle-groove at a distance of 30-40 cm from the core of the bush. It will be useful to us later, for applying effective fertilizers. I will definitely tell about them at the end of the article.
Watering and preventive treatment: the punches that many recklessly skip
Let me remind you, comrades. Now a strategically important process for the future harvest is taking place. Currant bushes lay flower buds. For everything to go like clockwork, the plants must not dry out..
If there is no rain in the garden for several days and the topsoil in the near-trunk circle is dry, water:
- black currants - 3-4 buckets (30-40 l);
- red or white - 1-2 buckets (10-20 l).
So 30 or 40? We must focus on the size of the bush. The work will take very little time, and the benefits are enormous. See the result next year!
I advise you to do treatment for fungal diseases. My favorite in this business is a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid. I work both the bush and the trunk circle. For plants with signs of ailments, the procedure is mandatory, for externally healthy ones, it is desirable for prevention. Now it will be wet and fungi will start to rage.
Pruning currants in late summer: the difference is noticeable
I used to think: the more branches, the more harvest. In reality, everything turned out to be exactly the opposite: do not wait for good berries from a dense bush.
- First you need to cut out all the sick-dry-old with lichens - a haircut will heal the currants.
- The branches that spread on the ground are useless for the plant.
- Then comes the thinning turn. Leave one of the two branches growing side by side. Anything that thickens the bush goes under the pruner.
- It is worth putting things in order in the root growth. Remove excess without pity.
Getting rid of excess balance the currant bush begins to do what is in the hands of the gardener. Lay flower buds.
Zest on currant cake: "delicious" top dressing
Help to properly lay the buds and prepare for the winter currants will help topical dressings containing potassium and phosphorus:
- "Autumn" - complex fertilizers. I always take with trace elements, so that my currants receive full nutrition. I scatter the granules into the groove around the trunk circle, which I wrote about above. Then - watering, so that the fertilizer begins to dissolve and act.
- 30 g of superphosphate and 10 g of potassium sulfate.
- Wood ash is the choice of gardeners who are fierce about the use of chemicals.
Although personally, I do not see anything wrong with purchased fertilizers. And you, comrades?
