Why did I stop picking cabbage roots in the fall, and leave them to winter in the garden.
Cabbage is grown in literally every vegetable garden. Such popularity of the vegetable is due not only to the fact that cabbage is tasty and healthy, but it is also perfectly stored throughout the entire cold period.
Late varieties of cabbage are perfectly capable of reaching the new harvest even at home.
When the cabbage crop is harvested and brought to fruition, you should pay attention to the beds that must be prepared for wintering. Previously, I, like many other gardeners, thoroughly cleared the garden of weeds and remaining cabbage roots.
But then I learned something and stopped wasting time and energy on such useless work.
So why is there no need for thorough cleaning of the vegetable garden from the roots and stalks of cabbage?
True, there is a small, but very important point: the remains of cabbage, which will lie under the snow in winter in your beds, should belong only to a completely healthy plant.
If your crop has been affected by any disease, whatever remains of it should be harvested and burned.
So why risk leaving cabbage stalks?
The fact is that the worms that process the soil in the garden are very partial to cabbage leftovers. And the more worms, the better the soil in the beds.
They eat parts of the cabbage suitable for food, and the rest will have to be removed and burned in the spring. Ash left over from burning is applied to the vegetable garden as fertilizer.
In addition, cabbage contains substances similar to those that saturate the soil with green manure. The beds receive nutrients from rotted cabbage.
This saves time and effort that would have to be spent on sowing green manure and their subsequent processing.
I have been leaving cabbage stems and roots in the beds for several years. In addition, I peel the top leaves from cabbage heads right in the garden.
All these residues fertilize the soil perfectly and I need much less fertilizer to enrich my garden and increase yields.
