Why is the impulse screwdriver more powerful than usual? Its working principle and advantages

Among the cordless power tools there is a special type of screwdrivers - impulse. Or they are also called wrenches or screwdrivers. They look like this:

It seems that the tool is simpler or less powerful than a regular screwdriver. But tightening the fasteners with them is a pleasure. This tool does its job with such ease and power that it leaves behind all conventional power screwdrivers. Examples in work can be seen in the video:

How is this power provided, despite its modest dimensions? The device and the principle of operation. If we disassemble a regular screwdriver and an impulse screwdriver (why it is called that - it will become clear below), we will see the following differences:

The impact wrench uses a different motor. Namely, brushless. These are used in quadcopters. As you can see, such electric motors are almost half the length. After the planetary mechanism, another mechanism is installed, which creates the effect of such power for the screwdriver. This is a striking mechanism. And in a conventional screwdriver, after the planetary screwdriver, a force adjustment mechanism (scrolling with resistance) is installed.

The striking mechanism is quite simple. It creates a blow not along the axis (as in a hammer drill), but in the direction of rotation. High frequency and low amplitude shocks, micro shocks. This allows you to easily screw in fasteners even in those conditions where it is extremely difficult or impossible for a conventional tool to do this.

Many have seen a pneumatic wrench in car services or at tire changers. It also works in a similar way, but with a larger impact amplitude and lower frequency. This is the progenitor of modern impulse screws. Thanks to this, the wrench unscrews the rusted joints, or vice versa, tightens the hub nuts on the wheels with decent effort.

Why nutrunners have a cost, almost two times higher than a conventional screwdriver with a collector motor - I do not understand. Due to the high resource, greater reliability? Or the percussion mechanism is difficult to manufacture, because is it made of steel? But not twice as expensive ?!

Bits for fasteners - universal for all screwdrivers. By the way, according to reviews, the screwdriver practically does not grind them, because there is no turning of the bit in the fastener.

Another feature of the impulse screwdriver is that this tool, which has even less power, will screw the fasteners in the place where a regular powerful screwdriver cannot handle.

In general, for builders who work with wood, build roof structures - the impulse screwdriver is simply irreplaceable. Even taking into account the ease of tightening structural screws for wood - an impulse screwdriver will make it easier and faster.
