What happens to garlic if you plant it in a newly dug garden bed for the winter?
The future harvest of garlic depends on various factors. One of the main conditions is a properly prepared soil for planting.
The fact is that winter garlic should never be planted in the ground, which was dug up just before planting. But why?
The soil is generally lumpy, especially if it is loamy.
Even if you rake carefully to break up the earth clods, they will still remain in the lower layer.
Then, when it rains or other precipitation, the soil will begin to sink, filling the voids between the clods.
Following the ground, garlic goes deeper, which in the spring will be more difficult to break through.
Usually, garlic is planted to a depth of no more than 5-7 cm. Frosts at this depth are not terrible.
A layer of earth covering the cloves of garlic protects them from freezing.
But, in the case of a deeper location in the soil, the garlic will take longer to grow, and later it will be more difficult for gardeners to dig it out in order to harvest the entire crop.
Based on this, we can draw the following conclusion: a bed for planting winter garlic must be prepared in advance, not less than two weeks in advance.
During this period, the soil will settle under the influence of precipitation and will no longer be compacted so much as to draw in the garlic to a depth.
As a result, harvesting will become easy and simple.
