When and how best to cover roses. My experience does not let me down
Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!
Do you want your favorite roses to come out of winter without loss? Take care of their hiding place. "Warm" wintering will guarantee that garden plants will not be caught by frost. And in the spring, roses will immediately begin to head for lush flowering, and not for recovery from stress. Let's find out when it is time to get to work and what the rose really needs.
Roses hiding rules that I follow unconditionally
First, it's worth mentioning 6 important points of sending your favorite flowers for the winter.
1. In October, when the plant stops actively developing, it costs tear off all the leaves, comrades. A primitive procedure reduces the risk of fungal diseases in roses to zero. And it is advisable to remove the foliage in 2 approaches - first, carefully tear off the lower ones, after a week - remove the upper ones. Less stress for the garden plant.
2. Climbing roses - the ladies of the garden - bend to the ground in advance for positive temperatures (I like the figure around 15 ° C). While they are flexible. Due to the cold, the stems become oak and break when laid on the ground.
3. When the daytime temperature is consistently below 10 ° C, the rose cut off unripe and diseased branches from the rose. Even under the secateurs, that part of the shoot is sent that prevents you from making a shelter. If you cut a bush in the garden for warmth, then a haircut will stimulate the growth of new branches. They still do not have time to mature, and they will take away the strength from the rose.
4. The scourge of roses is fungal diseases. After removing leaves and pruning it is welcomed preventive fungicide treatment. For example, Bordeaux liquid. Otherwise, during thaws under the shelter, fungi will begin to actively reproduce. And the gardener will have to complain that "Rose for some reason disappeared"and"I wish I didn't hide at all like a neighbor".
5. Shelter - Shelter. But the root system of the rose deserves special attention. Simple hilling of the flower with peat or earth will protect the roots from freezing. Nobody knows what kind of frost awaits us this winter.
6. Shelter of a rose must let air through. Otherwise, the bush will mate in one winter. In recent years I have preferred lutrasil or spunbond on the arcs. From folk remedies, only pine spruce branches are not inferior to him. But its extraction is a dubious undertaking from the point of view of ecology and love for a living forest.
I advise you to adhere to 5 simple rules for everyone who not only loves the garden, but appreciates it.
When to cover roses?
And when do you cover roses? Share the tricks with me and with other readers in the comments. For example, I'm terribly interested!
My experience has convinced me that the main thing is not to rush. Any rose without loss tolerates the lowering of the thermometer to -15 ° C. A shelter on the plus side can end in rot and long-term treatment of a rose in the spring from fungal diseases, suddenly "from nowhere".
I am waiting for the weather to stop swinging and more or less settle down. Let the temperature be below zero both day and night.. It is then that the roses finally fall asleep until spring, and we can get to work.
In Northwest Russia, where I live, the time to cover roses comes in late October or early November. In regions where the temperature does not drop below -15 ° C, roses do not need to be covered at all.
