Prepare roses for winter: how to feed, treat diseases and pests, cover
In September, you need to take care of roses, namely, prepare them for winter. The cold season for roses is an ordeal.
Inexperienced and novice gardeners think that it is enough to put peat under the root zone and cover the flowers on top under the arch with spunbond. As a result, semi-living plants or extinct roses are obtained by spring. Until the middle of summer, you have to wait for the flower culture to rise.
Basic steps to prepare roses for wintering
The main procedures that will save plants from frost are proper feeding, as well as treatment from pests and diseases, so that the culture goes into winter strong and healthy.
Top dressing in autumn
In September-October, it is necessary to give roses at least three dressings. The main elements that are needed during this period are phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Each of them performs its own function. So, potassium sharply increases the content of sugars, the latter reduce the water content in cells. Thus, less ice forms in the cells of roses during frost, they are not torn apart.
Phosphorus increases the amount of carbohydrates, which contribute to the rapid maturation of all plant organs, which is important during wintering.
How to feed
For 10 liters of water, you need to take 1 tablespoon of superphosphate, 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate, 1 tablespoon of magnesium sulfate, 10 grams of boric acid. Superphosphate is used as an extract.
Pour 10 liters of solution for each flower bush. In the fall, the plants must be fed at least three times.
Treatments for diseases and pests
In September-October, roses must be treated 2-3 times against pests and diseases. Plants can do without spraying if they are not sick.
If the roses have been infested with pests and diseases, then the following solution should be prepared. The following drugs must be used: Fundazol, Topaz, Scot, Aktara.
All components must be pre-mixed separately; a tablespoon of urea and a couple of spoons of liquid soap must be added to a bucket of mixture. Next, pour the solution into a sprayer and treat the plants.
After 7 days, you need to treat the roses with a copper-containing preparation, for example, use Abiga Peak. These drugs work against many diseases and pests.
Roses are covered with spruce branches, spunbond. coniferous litter, peat, sawdust are used as mulch.
