Winter garlic sprouted in autumn
Fiery fireworks, comrades vegetable growers!
Today, hasty winter garlic is on the agenda. Due to premature germination BEFORE winter, summer residents do not count the summer harvest. Take timely action before frost hits. And you will not be left in a garden loss due to the fact that the cloves confused autumn with spring.
Educational program about early germination of garlic: why this happens and what is dangerous for the summer resident
Winter garlic is not planted according to the calendar. It is planted 2-3 weeks before the onset of frost. The meaning of this solemn event is that the cloves have time to take root, but do not grow. In an ideal vegetable garden, autumn feather growth is held back by the low temperature that comes on schedule.
But in reality, perfect vegetable gardens do not exist. Frosts are postponed indefinitely. And the above zero temperature acts on the planted teeth, like a trigger. 7-10 ° C is enough for the green mass to grow simultaneously with rooting.
And here the risk increases that some of the garlic will freeze out. Remember that in an ideal vegetable garden, garlic sits at a depth. There he is not afraid even of Siberian frosts. In reality: sub-zero temperatures hit the greens - the feather rots - rot and cold get to the clove.
Garlic, comrades, is a surprisingly tenacious culture. If the whole garden has sprouted, then in the spring the summer resident is missing only part of the harvest. According to my observations, from 20 to 50% of hasty garlic dies. The stronger and more sudden the frost without snow, the greater the yield loss. Other "frostbitten" ones wake up next year, but they hinder their development and, as a result, do not gain all possible mass.
But we don't want to let them, right? Comrades, I propose to start acting!
Simple trick # 1: keep greens from frost
During the winter, a feather of garlic will freeze anyway. But the task of a conscientious gardener who wants to harvest to the maximum is to make the process smooth and protect the rooted cloves.
A temporary shelter comes to the rescue. To do it - half an hour on the strength. Here are the options:
- Fallen leaves. There are so many of them in our gardens, right?
- Straw and cut annuals. I like the idea of covering with fluffy marigolds.
- Any breathable agrofiber. I am sure that after the end of the summer cottage season, a couple of meters were lying around in each household farm. Just do not use the film - under it the garlic will not freeze, but it will resist.
Comrades, please note: the shelter must be temporary. It is designed to protect the garlic from frost until enough snow has fallen. The first snowdrifts are a signal to remove an artificial shelter from the garden bed and replace it with a natural one, throwing snow with a shovel. Remember that snow is the best protection for any plant.
Simple Trick # 2: Minimize Waste
Anyone who does not agree to lose part of the harvest because of the insidiousness of the Russian weather, I propose to rummage in the supplies of garlic. Plant a dozen more in the aisles between the sprouted teeth - and in the spring you will not notice the loss. Planted 40 - grew 40. The loss of a frozen dozen will pass without a trace. Hurry up before the soil is completely frozen.
