Orchid Roots: 3 Deadly Mistakes in Beautiful Flower Care
Often, an acquired orchid begins to wither over time. Novice flower growers do not take into account that orchids are epiphytic flowers and, as a result, make gross mistakes in their care.
Top dressing
Healthy orchid roots are plump and green or light gray in color. Sometimes flower growers feeding a flower increase the dose of fertilizer and this is a fatal mistake.
The first signal for a burn of the root system is leaf lethargy, wrinkling and darkening of the roots. In this case, you need to immediately save the flower.
1. Remove the orchid from the pot, rinse the roots.
2. Put the flower by its roots in clean water at room temperature for 2 hours.
3. Remove the orchid from the water and leave for 4 hours in a bright place.
4. Plant the flower in a new substrate or in a well-washed and dried old one.
Note! Hard water can also cause darkening of the roots.
Watering
The flood of the flower causes root rot. The grayish color of the roots means it's time to water the orchid. To do this, the pot is immersed in a container of water for 6-7 hours so that the entire substrate is saturated with moisture. When the roots decay, the flower is reanimated.
1. Remove from the ground and remove all rotten roots.
2. Leave to dry for 12 hours.
3. They are planted in a dry substrate.
Important! Orchids cannot be planted in the ground and in regular pots. For them, there is a special pine bark substrate and transparent pots with ventilation holes.
The roots of phalaenosis, like the ground part, are involved in photosynthesis and an incorrectly selected pot and substrate will destroy the flower.
Temperature
Orchids are inhabitants of the rainforest. For them, the optimum temperature of the content is from +20 to +27 C. If in cold weather it is left next to a slightly open window, the roots will be supercooled. This is especially dangerous after watering.
Even a single hypothermia can destroy a flower. Therefore, when airing the house, do not forget to remove the flower away from drafts and cold.
If, nevertheless, the orchid received hypothermia, then it must be removed to a warm place. However, it cannot be placed near heating devices. Phalaenopsis cannot be watered immediately after hypothermia.
Phalaenopsis can still survive making mistakes in caring for leaves, but mistakes with roots can be disastrous. Before purchasing an orchid, you must study the conditions of maintenance and care in advance. In general, phalaenopsis is an unpretentious plant and you do not need to be afraid to keep it.
